There might be a new coach and a load of sanctions hitting the Ole Miss program going into the season, but with the program not eligible for a post-season game, the Every Game Is A Bowl attitude has to start now.
It’s going to be a season-long audition for Matt Luke to see what he can do under trying circumstances, and it starts by doing what the Rebels’ rival couldn’t to start last season.
Beat South Alabama.
It was one of the shockers of the 2016 opening weekend when Mississippi State fell to the Jaguars in a thrilling 21-20 game.
But it’s all about Ole Miss and how it handles itself and the redshirt season, starting with what needs to be an easy win over a Jaguar team that’s fine, but isn’t talented enough to beat an SEC team.
Of course, it wasn’t supposed to be talented enough to beat one last year, either.
One Reason Why South Alabama Will Win
The lines are a plus, with the potential there for the USA defensive front to turn into a killer right away.
With DE Jimmie Gipson back after missing way too much time hurt, and with Rocell McWilliams transferring over from Missouri, the Jaguars should be able to make up for some shaky areas with a great pass rush from a front four that’ll more than hold its own against a good veteran Rebel offensive front.
The Jaguar offensive line should be its biggest positive early on, at least in terms of experience. It’s not going to blast away, but it should have a few good moments against an Ole Miss run defense that has to be a whole lot better.
One Reason Why Ole Miss Will Win
There’s a chance the new style of offense works right away and the Rebels simply outgun the Jaguars from the start.
USA has the lines, and it has a few great defensive playmakers and a nice running back in Xavier Johnson, but the offense isn’t built to keep up in any sort of a shootout.
New Rebel offensive coordinator Phil Longo is going to try taking things up a few levels. QB Shea Patterson has the skills to spread the ball around quickly to a good group of receivers.
Get the ball moving, control the action from the start, keep the Jaguar D on its heels.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s not going to be smooth sailing for Ole Miss, but it’ll be an effective win.
The South Alabama defense will be plucky early on, but the offense won’t be able to crank up the production enough to hang around once the Rebels go on a run.
After a rough offseason, Ole Miss will finally have something positive – even if it isn’t perfect.
