Week 1 Expert Picks

One Reason Why Albany Will Win

The Great Danes are used to being a pain in the butt to start the season against an FBS team, beating Buffalo on the road to kick things off last season in a strong 7-4 campaign.

This year’s version should be even stronger, especially on defense with eight returning starters from a group that allowed just eight touchdown passes last season.

With ODU going from David Washington at quarterback to former walk-on Blake LaRussa, it might take a little while before the offense is able to do more than run effectively – especially against this Albany D.

One Reason Why Old Dominion Will Win

The formula should be easy. Run Ray Lawry, rely on the tough defense, expect LaRussa to hit on a few third down passes, and get out alive.

The expectations are there now for the former FCS program to be good enough to challenge for the Conference USA title, and it has the depth and talent to do it. But first, the Monarchs can’t turn the ball over or make a while slew of big mistakes.

Don’t expect ODU to beat itself.

What’s Going To Happen

Albany is good enough to keep this from being a blowout in any way, but Old Dominion will be ultra-efficient offensively and will come up with enough third down stops defensively to get off the field. It won’t be an amazing performance, but against a dangerous team, it’ll be effective.
