Will the next in the Broncos’ line of star running backs justify the hype?
The next in our list of the Mountain West’s 50 best football players is a relative rarity: An athlete without much actual in-game production under his belt. It’s rare but, when you consider the situation, the potential for a breakout from our next athlete is high.
Alexander Mattison is set to assume the starting running back role at Boise State after running for 328 yards and averaging 4.9 yards per carry as a backup to Jeremy McNichols in 2016. He made many of his moments on the field count, though: Mattison ran for 61 yards and a score in his first college game against Louisiana-Lafayette, then ran 100 yards on just 18 carries against San Jose State.
The expectations in Boise are high — the Broncos’ leading rusher has an average of 1,427 yards since 2010 — but the former three-star recruit is a good bet to extend Boise State’s recent legacy.
