One Reason Why Miami University Will Win
Marshall should be better – in theory.
After a disastrous 2016 season, the Thundering Herd might have the talent to get back to a bowl game, but they have to all but start over in the receiving corps and the awful running game has to quickly find a spark again.
MU has work to do on the defensive front, but the linebacking corps is going to be outstanding and the secondary a rock, The nation’s 25th-ranked defense of last year gets back nine starters, and as long as the ends come through, Marshall’s offense should sputter. Again.
One Reason Why Marshall Will Win
What’s Marshall’s biggest issue? The run defense has to hold up better after a horrible season. That won’t be a problem against a Miami program that hasn’t been able to run the ball effectively for a long, long time.
Five of the top six tacklers are back with a good-looking secondary that should be able to keep down Gus Ragland and the RedHawk passing game just enough to keep the score low. There will be plenty of short MU drives.
What’s Going To Happen
Marshall won’t exactly be Marshall again, but it’ll look a whole lot better.
This is like a good minor bowl matchup that’ll have a few ragged moments, but will end up getting better as it goes on.
Can Ragland be sharp enough to pull this off on the road? He’ll be great, but Marshall will come up with the offensive balance that was missing so much last year to pull off a thriller.
The lack of a RedHawk running game will matter – the Herd will tee off on Ragland with a pass rush that’ll finally show up again.
