Louisville (0-0) vs. Purdue (0-0) Game Preview
You’d think this would be a natural regional battle on a regular basis considering the two schools are only about 180 miles apart, both are into basketball, and both draw from sort of the same fan base in the middle of Indiana – at least the parts that aren’t into the Hoosiers.
But this is just the second time the two have gotten it on, with the first go-round a 22-22 tie in an ugly 1987 season when both teams went 3-7-1.
And now the score can finally be settled.
Played in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Purdue era under Jeff Brohm gets kicked off during primetime on national TV with a chance to show off the new high-powered passing attack – or, at least, what should be a fun air show.
But, of course, that’s not why you called.
Can Lamar Jackson be Lamar Jackson again?
Can Louisville blow off a rough end to last season and get the machine in place to do even more once the ACC season rolls around?
Alabama and Florida State kick off about a half hour after this starts, but if the Cardinals are doing their thing, that might be enough.
But if Purdue has it figured out right away under Brohm and this is all of a sudden 2016 Western Kentucky on offense, you’re going to stay tuned.
One Reason Why Louisville Will Win
The Purdue offense won’t be there quite yet.
Oh sure, there will be some glimmers of explosion and greatness, but it’ll take a little while – or a year or so – before this becomes the type of basketball-on-grass attack that puts up yards and points in bunches.
The receiving corps is all but starting over, and the timing might need a little while. That’s not a plus against a Louisville defense that got rolled at the end of last year, but gets back eight starters for new coordinator Peter Sirmon to work with.
The secondary will be good enough to hold its own.
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
While everyone will show up to see Mr. Heisman on one side, and the new-look Purdue O on the other, the Boilermaker defense could turn into the stunning story.
It was fine last season for about a half, and then it kept wearing out. This year, new defensive coordinator Nick Holt should be able to mold the veteran group into something better, especially at linebacker.
Depth is a problem, and stars in the defensive interior are an issue, but the linebackers are in place to potentially keep Jackson from being Jackson.
Markus Bailey could be the best defensive player on the field, and there’s enough talent around him to keep everything Louisville likes to do under wraps.
What’s Going To Happen
In the battle of former WKU head coaches, Bobby Petrino will have more horses and more talent in what should be a fun shootout.
Purdue will be more than up to the challenge for a while, but eventually the Cardinals will break through and go on a scoring run. The Purdue passing game will try bombing away, but QB David Blough will get picked off a few times, Jackson will take advantage, and then everyone will turn their full attention to Bama-FSU.
