Northern Iowa came up with a disappointing 2016, struggling through a losing season with way, way too many close calls. The Panthers cranked up the offense, but five of their six defeats were by six points or fewer.
But they started out with a win over Iowa State.
With Iowa up next, and Texas coming to Ames at the end of the month, and with a trip to Oklahoma to follow, the Cyclones can’t afford to lose to UNI yet again.
They’ve lost three times in the series since 2007. Drop another one, and all but forget about a bowl game.
One Reason Why Northern Iowa Will Win
It’s going to take a little while for the Iowa State defensive front to come together and be solid. There’s upside, but the D is going through just enough of an overhaul to be an early concern.
That’s not a plus against a UNI offense with eight starters returning led by three linemen and a terrific receiving corps. Throw in the nine returning starters on defense, and the Panthers are loaded with veterans.
This is a much better team than the one that won the opener last season. However …
One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win
This should be a much stronger Iowa State offense than the one that showed upside and promise last year. The line is a problem with four new starters, but the skill spots are as good as the Cyclones have fielded in a long, long time.
WR Allen Lazard is the star, but the running back situation is fantastic, Jacob Park has settled in at quarterback, and for the first time in a long time, Iowa State has firepower. UNI will put points on the board, but the Cyclones are built bomb away when needed.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s Iowa State vs. Northern Iowa – it’s going to be a fight.
The veteran Panthers will be just nasty enough defensively to keep this close, and the passing game will come up with a few great scoring drives, but this is a different Iowa State team. It might not be dominant, but it’ll get by the FCSer – even one that’s as dangerous as UNI.
