Georgia is supposed to win the SEC East.
It’s got the talent, the skill players, and the defense to get to the conference title game and be a real, live player in the College Football Playoff chase.
But Appalachian State might just be good enough to pull off the upset.
If the Mountaineers don’t win the Sun Belt title, they’re going to come really, really close with a dangerous team full of veterans that won’t be fazed in anyway by the big SEC environment.
Ask 2016 Tennessee just how good ASU can be.
Georgia might have a fun showdown up next at Notre Dame, but it’s going to have to deal with a great ground game, a heady quarterback, and a culture of winning – Appalachian State expects to win this game.
On the other side, if Georgia wins this in a walk, then it’s time to get excited for what might be coming next. This is a real, live test for the Bulldogs. This is a real, live moment to see how good they can potentially be.
One Reason Why Appalachian State Will Win
The running game has to work from the start. That’s not a given against a Georgia defense with the potential to finish in the top ten nationally, but it might not matter.
The Mountaineers have a tough offensive front, a fantastic running back in Jalin Moore, and Lamb can make plays on the move. While they were stopped by Miami’s great D last season, they still ran for 144 yards and came up for 184 against Tennessee.
Of course, that was last season, and ASU lost to the to FBS teams on the slate, but if Georgia isn’t sharp right out of the gate, it’s going to lose control of the tempo right away.
One Reason Why Georgia Will Win
The Appalachian State defense will eventually be just fine, and it’s got just enough talent to be one after finishing ninth in the nation in scoring D and 17th overall. But there’s reworking to do.
Some of the key parts and heart-and-soul types have to be replaced in the front seven, and the secondary is undergoing a bit of an overhaul.
Running the ball shouldn’t be a problem for a Georgia offense that’ll crank up Nick Chubb early, but the chances will be there for Jacob Eason to fire away early against an ASU secondary going through a little bit of reworking.
As long as Eason stays away from CB Clifton Duck, the passing attack should thrive with the Mountaineers fully focused on the Bulldog backs.
What’s Going To Happen
The Georgia defense will take over.
It’s not going to be the smoothest of games by Eason and the Bulldog O, but it’ll take advantage of enough chances to take control late in the first half and let the D to the rest.
Appalachian State will come up with a few good scoring drives, but not enough of them. The Mountaineers will settle for too many field goals when they’ll need seven to stay alive.
