Here we go with the Luke Fickell era, with a good head coaching prospect who’s ready, a great-looking team that just needs a little bit of a boost, and a new look that should make for an interesting season.
However, the Bearcats need to use this game as a tune up in a really, really big way. And why? Up next are at Michigan, at Miami University, at Navy.
UC should be good enough two win at least two of those – okay, the last two – but it’s still going to take a little work.
And that’s why you schedule Austin Peay.
The Governors went 0-11 last year thanks to a brutal defense that couldn’t stop anyone who can walk and run a football at the same time.
One Reason Why Austin Peay Will Win
It’s the second season of the rebuilding process – at least, there’s the hope of rebuilding – under head man Will Healy, and he has a few decent young playmakers to work around. Cincinnati is still going to be trying to figure it all out on offense, needing to go from doing nothing, to cranking up the tempo and the production by going fast, fast, fast.
Don’t expect the Bearcats to be smooth. There will be some kinks to work out, and defensively, the pass rush has to show up early. At the very least, the Governors will come out bombing away.
One Reason Why Cincinnati Will Win
The offense should work. New offensive coordinator Mike Denbrook is looking to take an attack that couldn’t score a lick at the end of last year and make it explode. That shouldn’t be a problem against this Austin Peay D.
Yes, it’s a new year with new parts, but for an Austin Peay defense that couldn’t do anything right, the Bearcats should be able to pick their poison.
There’s still a battle for several jobs, and a whole slew of key players will get to audition before having to deal with Michigan.
What’s Going To Happen
The Bearcat coaching staff will try out the quarterbacks who’ve been battling it out all summer, and they’ll all look fantastic. The offense will open it up fast, the points will crank up early, and it’s not going to be pretty. This will be over by the end of the first quarter.
