Boise State (0-0) vs. Troy (0-0) Game Preview
At best, this might be a battle that will end up playing a big role in the Group of Five spot in a New Year’s Six bowl. Or, it might be a fight between two favorites to win their respective conferences.
Or, it might just be a wild and fun shootout that could turn into one of the better games on an already loaded Saturday.
Boise State has work to to with a trip to Washington State up next, and road games at BYU and San Diego State as part of the first half of the season, but this game is every bit as dangerous. Troy proved last season it could go to Clemson and bring a fight – it’s not going to be fazed by traveling to Boise.
One of the breakthrough teams of last season, Troy still has a date at LSU to face, but outside of that, it’s smooth sailing after this up until the regular season finale at Arkansas State. Win, and this becomes a Group of Five darling.
But again, on its own, this should be a great game to go along with all the implications.
One Reason Why Troy Will Win
The playmakers are back to keep the offense humming.
After a fantastic breakthrough season, the Trojans welcome back QB Brandon Silvers, RB Jordan Chunn, and almost all the receivers who made the machine go.
This is a veteran group that went through the wars last season, and should be able to adapt and adjust as the game goes on against a Boise State defense that’ll start out loading up against the run, but will have to deal with Silvers. The fast-paced offensive style should dictate what Boise State does, and not the other way around.
Considering the Broncos had a hard time putting teams away last season, if that happens again, Troy just has to hang around. Stay alive into the fourth quarter, and the experience should take over.
One Reason Why Boise State Will Win
Did Troy step up at offensive tackle right away?
Everything else is in place for the Trojan offense, but there’s a concern on the outside with two new tackles stepping in. Part of the success of the offense came from pass protection, allowing just eight sacks on the year. The shuffling has to lead to consistency.
After a down year for the pass rush, Boise State is about to ramp it all back up.
This isn’t a massive defensive front, but it can move, and it’ll bring the heat from all sides. Get ready for a more aggressive-looking Bronco D that’ll attack Silvers.
The defense has to start taking the ball away more than it did, and it’s facing a team that didn’t like giving it up. That should change.
What’s Going To Happen
While the star power is at quarterback with Silvers and Boise State’s Brett Rypien, this might come down to the respective running games.
Can Troy’s Jordan Chunn get free enough to do all he does to be the catalyst? Nope – Boise State will key on him first.
Can Boise State get more physical on the offensive front and hammer on a Troy defense that was great last year, but had its moments when it gave up yards in chunks by the effective ground games? Yup – Boise State will grind this out more than be flashy.
