What kind of Baylor team will show up in the reboot?
It’s Baylor, so it’s not exactly extending itself in non-conference play – UTSA and Duke coming up next – but will it come out and dominate under Matt Rhule?
Liberty is more than just a cupcake – it went 6-5 last season, including decent fights against Virginia Tech and SMU – but the Bears need to come out roaring.
Flame head coach Turner Gill has a good-looking team returning, but this is all about just how good Baylor is out of the box.
One Reason Why Liberty Will Win
Baylor is pivoting in styles. It’s not going to wing it all around the yard like the previous versions, and it might take a little while to get the O going – at least that’s Liberty’s hope.
The receiving talent is okay, but it’s not next-level great, while the quarterback situation is still a wee bit of a battle.
Liberty has to get the running game going against the veteran – but suspect – Bear defensive front. If the Flames can control the time of possession, and hope Baylor sputters a bit trying to put the pieces together, this might not get brutally ugly.
One Reason Why Baylor Will Win
The offense will work. It’s not going to be Art Briles era crazy, but it’ll be balanced, powerful, and the production will be there right away from all the parts, especially from a ground game that’ll take over early.
With Zach Smith and Anu Solomon still fighting it out to see who’ll be the steady starter, they’ll both get their chances. This isn’t all about tuning up against an FCS team – there are still jobs on the line. Everyone will be pushing and playing hard – there won’t be any looking ahead.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s only one week, but it’ll be an ultra-effective performance from a Bear program that just needs to get back on the field and start playing again with a new regime and a new start. Rhule will have his team looking great from the start on both sides of the ball. Liberty is about to run into a buzzsaw.
