Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.

Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?

It’s the first game of the rest of Major Applewhite’s life.

And it’s not going to be a breeze.

A year before all the Tom Herman fun began, Houston lost a 27-7 stunner to UTSA to open up the 2014 season a year after hanging up 59 points in a blowout win. Under Applewhite, the Cougars need to establish right away that everything keeps rolling.

Even after an ugly bowl loss to end last year, there’s no problems in the transition of power.

This year’s UTSA team should be feisty defensively with a nice linebacking corps and just enough talent returning to be okay. The defense returns for of its top five tacklers, the receiving corps is dangerous, and the overall attitude that got the program to a bowl game last season still appears to be there.

But for a Houston program that started out last year with a dominant win over Oklahoma, nothing less than a big performance to kick things off will do.

Will the quarterback play be sharp enough? Assuming it’s Kyle Allen who gets the call, he’ll have plenty of time to operate, while the Cougar pass rush and the defensive front will live in the backfield.
