Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
When we last saw Clemson, it did the seemingly impossible and took down Nick Saban in a championship game. Now it’s going after his alma mater.
This is the tune-up game for the defending national champs before diving into showdowns against Auburn and Louisville – but this might not be the easiest of layups.
Kent State hasn’t had a decent offense in years, and it’ll have no prayer of keeping up the pace, but the defense – traditionally – has been a pain in the butt. It hasn’t equated to wins, or even a great scoring D, but that’s mostly because the O hasn’t done a thing to help the cause.
How mediocre has the Kent State attack been? It’s failed to score more than 21 points 25 times in 36 games over the last three seasons. Clemson has been held under 21 just five times in its last 71 games.
This won’t be pretty, but it might take a little bit of a push for this to tip into blowout mode. The Clemson offense will look great after a rocky first few drives, and the defense will shut down the Golden Flashes cold.
By comparison, Alabama took it easy on Kent State last year in a 48-0 win.
