What’s The Deal With Wisconsin?

Wisconsin was Wisconsin. Underseeded, it was completely and totally unfair that Villanova – a supposed No. 1 overall seed – had to deal with a Badger team that finished second in the Big Ten in both the regular season and the tournament. But UW did exactly what it needed to do, getting timely threes, hitting 53% from the field, and out rebounding the Wildcats in the 65-62 win.

However, the Badgers turned it over 14 times, had fouling problems, continued with their nightmarish season on the free throw line, hitting a horrific 7-of-16. But you know what you’re getting: great defense, smart play – watch Nigel Hayes after the final missed free throw to prevent the Wildcats from getting an easy prayer of a three – and great rebounding.

What’s The Deal With Florida?

The Gators did exactly what you’re supposed to do against Virginia – get up early and make it try gearing up the offense. They roared past the slow-and-go Cavaliers in a 65-39 win after getting up by 14 at halftime. The defense allowed Virginia to hit just 1-of-15 from three and connect on just 29% from the field.

The defense has been fantastic all season long, the offense doesn’t turn the ball over or make a slew of big mistakes, and is great at blocking shots and getting tough in the interior. Sound familiar? Florida is very, very Wisconsin-like, except it doesn’t pass the ball all that well.

What’s Going To Happen

Florida already dealt with the ultimate down-tempo team in Virginia, and showed just how dominant it could be. It’ll have to deal with a bigger battle against a veteran Badger team that knows how to sidestep the landmines.

Free throws didn’t cost Wisconsin against Villanova, but they will against the Gators. If you’re looking for a wild and crazy shootout … nope. First one to 60 wins.
