All You Really Need To Know About West Virginia
It was West Virginia at its best. The Mountaineers roared past Notre Dame hitting half of their shots from the field, forcing 14 turnovers, and moving the ball around well with 16 assists. They controlled the tempo all game long, overcame a good shooting day from the Irish attack, got 24 points out of Jevon Carter, and got at least three rebounds from six different players.
The Mountaineers lead the nation in steals and turnover margin – coming up with a ridiculous 10.2 steals per game – and they can hit from three when they absolutely have to. They get on the move and keep everything going with great passing and plenty of assists, and they dominate defensively for long stretches – just ask the Irish.
All You Really Need To Know About Gonzaga
The Bulldogs struggled to put together a complete game in the 79-73 win over Northwestern, but they survived the second half storm and moved on. Phenomenal early on, they dominated the Wildcats on both ends of the floor, but eventually the threes started falling, and the game turned into a fight. There can’t be that sort of a lull in production against the Mountaineers.
Amazing from the field, they’re No. 2 in the nation in field goal percentage – hitting 51% of their shots – and they’re just as good defensively, ranking second in the country allowing teams to connect on 37% of their chances. They rebound everything, the get physical when they have to, and they can run with anyone. This is a complete team.
What’s Going To Happen
Gonzaga is a good passing team, but it’ll give up just enough mistakes against the West Virginia pressure to make this a wild battle of swings. Eventually, the Bulldog inside presence will grind the game down, and then it’ll come down to free throws. Gonzaga will hit theirs, and the Mountaineers won’t.
