All You Really Need To Know About Providence

(Big East), RPI: 56, 11 seed

The Friars turned it on late in the season after a brutal run and a horrible January, losing nine of 13 games, and then the switch flipped on, winning six straight before getting bounced out of the Big East tournament. The defense is strong, the offense moves around the ball well, and there aren’t too many mistakes, but the offense is just okay.

There’s nothing happening on the boards, and the team can’t shoot free throws, but if it hits from three – it’s good from the outside – and it can overcome the lack of an inside presence, the defense can do the job.

All You Really Need To Know About USC

(Pac-12) 24-9 RPI: 41, 11 seed

Can the Trojans overcome a rotten late February run? They lost four in a row before pulling up out of the nosedive. But outside of a win over UCLA earlier, and a close loss to the Bruins in the Pac-12 tournament, there’s not a whole lot on the resume.

The decent backcourt makes the extra pass, is good from three, and the team is good on the free throw line, but the defense is lacking against the teams with talent and firepower. Good inside at times, there are plenty of blocked shots, but overall the D gets bombed on.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s wrong that USC has to play its way in. Its sin is that it’s not Arizona, UCLA or Oregon – three of the year’s elite teams – and while it might have struggled in early January, it got better. The Friars will get killed on the boards and will lose late on free throws. USC can hit them, Providence can’t.

Be a little afraid that the Trojans will be the trendy pick, but there’s a reason for it. They’ll have problems against the high-octane offenses, but Providence doesn’t have one.
