All You Really Need To Know About Purdue
(Big Ten) RPI: 19, 4 seed
The best team in the Big Ten during the season, Player of the Year Caleb Swanigan and company can do a little of everything right. The offense moves the ball around and makes the extra pass as well as anyone in the country, the big front gets on the glass, and the sharpshooters can bomb away from three.
The defense is okay, but it doesn’t create many mistakes and doesn’t block any shots – there’s not enough of a fear factor on the inside. As long as the guards aren’t giving the ball away, and if the offense is hitting the three, look out.
All You Really Need To Know About Vermont
(America East) RPI: 46, 13 seed
The America East regular season champs ripped through the tournament to finish the regular season on an impressive 21-game winning streak – the Catamounts haven’t lost since before Christmas.
There aren’t any amazing non-conference wins, but this is still a dangerous team that wins on defense, hitting the midrange shots, and doing a great job on the boards. Don’t expect much bombing from three, and there aren’t too many steals, but it’s a sound team that won’t beat itself.
What’s Going To Happen
Vermont’s inability to hit the three is going to be a killer. The Catamounts aren’t going to beat the Boilermakers on the boards, and they’re not going to force enough mistakes from a backcourt that’ll screw up from time to time. Both defenses will keep this low, but Purdue will make up for a bad Big Ten tournament with a great performance.
