Venue: Sprint Center, Kansas City, MO

What’s The Deal With Kansas?

Kansas turned up the attitude and the scoring explosion by roaring past Michigan State with a jaw-dropping performance both attacking the rim and hitting from the outside. Josh Jackson went off, scoring 23 points, while Devonte Graham caught fire hitting 4-of-6 from three. Michigan State might have been terrific in the first round against Miami, but it couldn’t keep up the pace.

Once again, the Jayhawks showed just how devastating they can be when it’s all working, out rebounding the Spartans 36-to-28 while turning up the pressure on both ends to turn a tight game into a laugher. They’ve got it all except, this season, on the free throw line. Against MSU, even that wasn’t an issue hitting 14-of-15.

What’s The Deal With Purdue?

Purdue almost gagged away a huge first half lead against Iowa State, clinging on late in the 80-76 win. Caleb Swanigan and Vince Edwards combined for 41 points, but it almost wasn’t enough. The defense went bye-bye for long stretches as the Cyclones seemed hit 50% from the field. However, when Purdue needed a big board, it got one, outrebounding ISU 38 to 28.

The offense has to gear it up to a whole other level, considering the Boilermaker defense doesn’t force enough mistakes and it doesn’t have a shot blocking presence. Kansas might be able to do whatever it wants to around the rim, but the Boilermakers are usually tougher defensively than they showed late against the Cyclones.

What’s Going To Happen

The offenses are going to bomb away. Only UCLA passes and moves the ball around better than Purdue, and almost no one has the complete arsenal that Kansas brings. Both teams are in the top ten in the nation in three-point shooting percentage, and both teams know how to put the offense into overdrive when needed. Kansas is just better at it.
