No. 79: Air Force Falcons

Air Force Falcons Prespring Status

Troy Calhoun has created a monster. The Falcons continue to be among the Mountain West elite, overcoming a midseason three-game losing blip to crank out six straight wins to finish off last year with another terrific ten-win season. It wasn’t the Mountain West championship-appearance campaign of 2015, but the machine still works.

As always, the Falcons have massive personnel losses, but that doesn’t seem to matter too much in the plug-and-play system that always seems to produce no matter what. It’s the system, the system, the system, but …

Air Force Falcons Biggest Issue

You don’t get better when you have to replace ten defensive starters. Yeah, again, Air Force always seems to find a way to do just fine with the try-hard types groomed for just this moment, but S Weston Steelhammer was a real, live player at any level – he can’t just be replaced – and in all, a ridiculous 12 of the top 13 tackles are gone.

Air Force Falcons Biggest Positive

The offense should be able to pick up the defensive slack for a while. Leading rusher Jacobi Owens is gone, as is leading receiver Jalen Robinette, but QB Arion Worthman is back after showing what he could do with the attack, and three decent linemen are to pave the way for Timothy McVeigh and the always-dangerous backfield – even if four of the top six rushers are gone.

Really, Why Are The Air Force Falcons Ranked Here?

For just about any other team, this ranking would be a gift considering the ridiculous number of personnel losses. There’s a total rebuild being done on the defensive side, while the offense has to get hot right away with a slew of new parts – losing Robinette is a big killer, too. Air Force gets the benefit of the doubt since it’s produced big things before after losing just about everyone, but it’s still going to take a step back.
