Florida 16, LSU 10: What Does It All Mean?

– Florida vs. Alabama for the SEC championship, and maybe more. Florida remains one of the five teams that controls its own destiny for the College Football Playoff. Beat Florida State, beat Alabama, and get in the final four.

It might not always be pretty, it might not always look great, but the defense bent and bent and bent, but didn’t break on what might be a historic goal line stand if Florida uses this win to do something amazing.

This is a banged up, bruised, and injury-riddled Florida team with a limited offense that got the one big pass play it needed, and the one stop it had to have when LSU was knocking on the door.

Is it going to be another ugly SEC title game against the Crimson Tide? At least Florida will get its shot.

Things might have been a wee bit different though if LSU had …

– Leonard Fournette … what was that? Are you injured or are you hurt? Originally out with an ankle injury, there was a pregame scuffle that all of a sudden inspired Fournette to suit up and get into the game. On the one hand, it was great that he gave it a go, even when he wasn’t supposed to play, but on the other side, it might be a NFL red flag.

If he was good enough to play after a little smack talk, why wasn’t he okay from the start? He ran 12 times for 40 yards including a bruising 11-yard run, but he wasn’t healthy enough to get into the game on the key goal line plays in the final moments.

– Is this really it for the Ed Orgeron era? He showed everything he needed to over the last few months to make LSU football matter again, and just because his team came up a few inches short, he’s still doing a magnificent job. But that’s the difference in history and how programs roll. If LSU scores and is off to the Sugar Bowl, no way Coach O isn’t the guy. Now the Jimbo Fisher talk kicks in big-time.

– Florida, at least, is in the Sugar Bowl. Assuming a win over Florida State, no matter what, the Gators will be off to New Orleans to face, almost certainly, the Big 12 champ. Of course, beat Alabama, and everything is different, but after all the problems and all the injuries, to get Florida to the Sugar Bowl will be special, no matter what.
