Why Notre Dame Will Win

NC State, welcome to a passing game.

The Wolfpack secondary hasn’t been anything special – allowing 200 yards or more in each of the last three games and getting picked clean by a 33-of-43 day by East Carolina.

The Irish might be having issues, but DeShone Kizer is playing as well – if not better – than any quarterback in college football, and that includes Lamar Jackson.

He’s thrown four picks, but he spread them out over the last four games, while he’s bombing away with almost 1,200 yards over the last three weeks and 14 touchdown passes on the season. Making his season even better, he’s dominating with a receiving corps that was supposed to be an issue, but all of a sudden doesn’t look all that bad.

The Irish are making up for the defensive problems by bombing away, and while this wasn’t part of the plan, the offense is now far better equipped to keep up the pace in a shootout. NC State isn’t really used to this – it’s going to have to press and push more than it’s had to over the last few weeks. However …

Why NC State Will Win

Ryan Finley has been fantastic.

The Boise State transfer has been a perfect fit for the Wolfpack, hitting 72% of his passes and coming off a 300-yard, three score day against Wake Forest. Best of all, he has yet to throw a pick.

This is the big moment for NC State with the chance to make a big national statement. Is beating Notre Dame really a big deal anymore? Absolutely, and the Wolfpack should be jacked up and ready to play like it against a defense that can’t seem to stop anyone from completing a forward pass.

But the Wolfpack can muck it up, too.

It’s supposed to be rainy and awful – thanks, Matthew – and NC State should be ready to crank up the ground game to go along with the short passing attack. Matthew Dayes is built for a game like this, with more than 100 yards in three of his four games, and with the pop in the interior to grind.

What’s Going To Happen?

For those of you dying for the Fighting Irish to get their revenge after losing the 2003 Gator Bowl – the only meeting between the two programs – you’re going to have to wait.

This should be the right game for the Irish. They have the offensive line to pound away, and they have the skill talent to fight through the conditions, but this is the one true road game until going to USC to end the season, and it’s going to matter.

NC State will be efficient, effective, and won’t turn the ball over enough. The weather will keep this from getting into a track meet, and field position is going to matter.

NC State is third in the nation in punting. It’ll tilt the field for most of the game.
