Why LSU Will Win

See, was that so hard?

All it took was one massive program change for the LSU to start to look like the team we’ve been all been waiting for.

Against Missouri last week, the offense rolled at will – despite the absence of Leonard Fournette – and the defense shut down the dangerous Tiger passing game cold. There was a different spring to the team’s step, the blocking was better, and everything was a bit crisper. Can it all carry over in Ed Orgeron’s second game in the job interview?

This is a banged up Florida team on the defensive front with Bryan Cox and Caleb Brantley each fighting through problems at the exact wrong time. Against Mizzou, LSU pounded away leading Derrius Guice and the ground game to 418 yards and six scores, averaging more than eight yards per carry.

The Tigers won’t be able to blast away like they did against the other Tigers, but they should be steady enough to take the heat off the passing game – there shouldn’t be too much pressing. This is a different team now, and it should play like it again.

Why Florida Will Win

Yeah, but Guice isn’t Fournette.

And Florida’s defense isn’t Missouri’s.

The Gators have been a killer against the run so far this year, keeping Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and everyone else to under 180 yards with no one averaging four yards per carry.

Even with the bumps and bruises, moving the Gator front four has been next to impossible, and the linebackers have been terrific – Jarrad Davis and Alex Anzalone are eating up everything.

Can LSU handle the pressure of a close, tight game on the road? Yeah, this was a different, better team last week against Mizzou, but now it’s going to have to be ready to open it up just a wee bit without making any mistakes. Florida might get penalized, but it doesn’t lose the turnover battle and it doesn’t beat itself.

LSU might have the receivers to start taking more shots down the field, but that’s not going to happen against this Gator secondary. The more the Tigers have to get away from the pounding ground game, but better it is for Florida.

What’s Going To Happen?

Both teams are able to own the field position battle, and both defense are strong enough to dominate at times and keep each offense from ever getting into a rhythm.

Luke Del Rio is expected to return, so there won’t be Purdue on Purdue action at quarterback, but the problems and injures on the Gator defensive line will be just enough of a problem to let the LSU running game be just a wee bit better.

Florida might be nasty on D, but the Tigers are playing with a massive chip on their shoulder right now. The momentum from the coaching change and the Orgeron effect will continue.
