What College Football Playoff Rankings Would Be After Week 5

It’s hard to not think of Clemson as the No. 1 team in the country. Or Alabama. Or even Michigan. But no one’s playing better than Ohio State right now, so for the moment, here’s the change – and the carrot at the end of the stick for Wisconsin to go after next week.

As always, the puzzle is tough to put together. For example, how good is Troy? That close call loss to Clemson on the road looks fantastic now after all the other blowout wins.

How about South Alabama? It wet the bed against a bad Louisiana-Lafayette, and lost to Georgia Southern, but it has a convincing win now over San Diego State, who beat Cal, who just beat Utah, who beat USC … we’re trying the best we can. The goal is to address the head-to-head wins as much as possible, since that’s the only fair way to do this. But it’s getting harder.

Hopefully this makes sense, and for any thoughts or interpretations, hit us at @ColFootballNews.

Based on looks, talent, and what’s happened so far, here we go with the Week 5. Rankings 1 to 128.

CFN Week 5 College Football Top 25 Rankings

1. Ohio State (4-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 2
Final Score: Ohio State 58, Rutgers 0
Up Next: at Wisconsin

Go ahead and put any one of the top four teams in the No. 1 spot, but it’s time to admit it – Ohio State is playing better than Alabama. Clemson has the win over Louisville, and the Crimson Tide did their part against USC and Ole Miss, but there hasn’t been anything close to a blip yet for the Buckeyes.

2. Alabama (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 1
Final Score: Alabama 34, Kentucky 6
Up Next: at Arkansas

No, Alabama didn’t do anything to not be No. 1, but the offensive line hasn’t been quite up to snuff, and the bumps and bruises might be taking a wee bit of a toll. Ohio State is simply playing sharper at the moment, but there’s no arguing against the Crimson Tide.

3. Clemson (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 6
Final Score: Clemson 42, Louisville 36
Up Next: at Boston College

And there you go. The Tigers held on and came through with the win they absolutely had to have, and now the ACC Atlantic is there for the taking. It might have been shaky, but they took down the dominant Louisville force. Not everything has gone smoothly, but again, they got the win.

4. Michigan (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 5
Final Score: Michigan 14, Wisconsin 7
Up Next: at Rutgers

The offense might have sputtered and coughed, and the kicking game was a nightmare, but the Wolverines survived the deadly Wisconsin defense to survive and advance. That Colorado win, by the way, is starting to look stronger and stronger.

5. Louisville (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 3
Final Score: Clemson 42, Louisville 36
Up Next: Duke (Oct. 14)

There’s no punishing Louisville for that. It might have been a bit of a rocky start, but Lamar Jackson almost pulled it off. Now the key is to start winning again and do it impressively. 11-1 might be enough for the CFP if there’s a strong win along the way over …

6. Houston (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 12
Final Score: Houston 42, Connecticut 14
Up Next: at Navy

It’s going to take a LOT of juice for the Cougars to keep living off that Oklahoma win, but they’re not giving anyone a chance to make a counterargument. They’re dominating mediocre teams, but they’re also setting themselves up for that showdown with the Cardinals.

7. Washington (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 15
Final Score: Washington 44, Stanford 6
Up Next: at Oregon

It wasn’t just that the Huskies beat the supposedly best team in the conference and the defending Pac-12 and Rose Bowl champs; it’s that they did it so convincingly. That’s the performance the program has been waiting years for.

8. Texas A&M (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 8
Final Score: Texas A&M 24, South Carolina 13
Up Next:Tennessee

No, it wasn’t scintillating, and no, it wasn’t magical. It was a decent SEC win to stay unbeaten against a rough overall slate. The UCLA win is looking better, and that Arkansas victory will be stronger as the year goes on. But next the Aggies need to prove themselves against …

9. Tennessee (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 7
Final Score: Washington 44, Stanford 6
Up Next: at Oregon

There are two ways to look at the Vols. They found a way to pull off yet another tough win, but they also put themselves in a nasty position they needed to bail themselves out of. They’re living a charmed life, but beat Texas A&M on the road, and it’s all good.

10. Wisconsin (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 4
Final Score: Michigan 14, Wisconsin 7
Up Next: Ohio State

That Michigan State win doesn’t seem like a big deal now, and at some point the Badgers need to be punished more for not having an offense. But even with all the injuries, they pushed Michigan really, really hard. With Ohio State at home, now it’s time to see if this team has any more magic against a brutal first half schedule.

11. Miami (4-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 17
Final Score: Miami 35, Georgia Tech 21
Up Next: Florida State

Finally, the Hurricanes had to play someone with a pulse, and they passed the test just fine. Would beating Florida State really matter at this point? For Miami, and where the program is hoping to be, absolutely. A win means it keeps pace in the Coastal with North Carolina and …

12. Virginia Tech (3-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 18
Up Next: at North Carolina

The loss to Tennessee is starting to be even more acceptable. Now, with a week off, it’s time for the Hokies to show whether or not they’re the real deal.

13. Stanford (3-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 9
Final Score: Washington 44, Stanford 6
Up Next: Washington State

Fine, so it’s one really, really bad day. It’s one loss on the road, and score doesn’t matter. Beat Washington State, and there’s still plenty of time to get back in the title chase considering the tough dates the Huskies have coming up.

14. Arkansas (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 22
Final Score: Arkansas 52, Incarnate Word 10
Up Next: Alabama

Alright, Hogs. You’ve had your tune-up. You’ve got everything in place as much as you ever have. The Bret Bielema era has been fun, but with one win over Alabama, everything changes.

15. Nebraska (5-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 13
Final Score: Nebraska 31, Illinois 16
Up Next: at Indiana (Oct. 15)

Remember, last year Nebraska couldn’t buy a tight win or a close call. Now it’s 5-0 and right there with Wisconsin as the stars of the West. Tommy Armstrong is playing well, the running game worked against Illinois, and the wins just keep on coming. However, that close call against Oregon doesn’t seem so great now.

16. Ole Miss (3-2)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 11
Final Score: Ole Miss 48, Memphis 28
Up Next: at Arkansas (Oct. 15)

The Rebels blew past Memphis with a huge day from the running game – and it wasn’t Chad Kelly who had to carry the load. Take that Florida State loss with a grain of salt considering that was the opener and the Seminoles were fresh and healthy – the Rebels are playing like a top ten-worthy team. They’ll be there if they beat Arkansas in two weeks.

17. Georgia (3-2)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 31
Final Score: Tennessee 34, Georgia 31
Up Next: at South Carolina

Be more impressed by the way Georgia came back to almost beat Tennessee, and try to blow off how it created a blueprint on how not to defend a Hail Mary. And give credit for the opening weekend win over …

18. North Carolina (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 33
Final Score: North Carolina 37, Florida State 35
Up Next: Virginia Tech

The Tar Heel D still can’t tackle a lick, but no one seems able to stop the passing game, either. Will the offense be enough to beat a rested Virginia Tech? It had better be, because the Hokies will run wild.

19. Colorado (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 28
Final Score: Colorado 47, Oregon State 6
Up Next: at USC

If the world ended right at this very moment, Colorado would forever be the Pac-12 South champs – or at least at the top of the standings. That Michigan loss is more than okay, but if the Buffs really want to be taken seriously, they’ve got to get by USC next week on the road.

20. Florida (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 16
Final Score: Florida 13, Vanderbilt 6
Up Next: LSU

Ehhhhhh, fine. So it was an ugly win over a decent defensive team that got its running game going. It’s time for a respect win, though, and beating LSU right now would be just that.

21. UCLA (3-2)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 32
Final Score: UCLA 45, Arizona 24
Up Next: at Arizona State

There it is. There’s the win and the performance that makes UCLA look like UCLA is supposed to. Josh Rosen was great, the defense was good enough, and now this just might be a Pac-12 South title contender – if it doesn’t blow it against Arizona State.

22. USC (2-3)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 37
Final Score: USC 41, Arizona State 20
Up Next: Colorado

USC played like a team that absolutely couldn’t afford to start the season 1-4. The offensive stars came out against the Sun Devils as the team played like the one we’ve all been waiting for. It dropped one good Pac-12 South team, now it’s time to do it again against the Buffs.

23. Florida State (3-2)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 10
Final Score: North Carolina 37, Florida State 35
Up Next: at Miami

The Seminoles came way too close to almost pulling out a gut-check win. The defense isn’t stopping anyone’s passing game right now, but Dalvin Cook and Deondre Francois might be just enough to get by Miami. They’d better be.

24. Arizona State (4-1)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 19
Final Score: USC 41, Arizona State 20
Up Next: UCLA

Don’t forget, the Sun Devils managed to get by Cal and Texas Tech – the blowout loss to USC was a bad day against a charged up team with something big to prove at home. However, if QB Manny Wilkins is down with a knee injury for any significant length of time, there’s a problem.

25. Boise State (4-0)

CFN Week 4 Rank: 27
Final Score: Boise State 21, Utah State 10
Up Next: at New Mexico

Beating Washington State will only go so far. Boise State will go 13-0 unless it implodes, but it had better start crushing and killing the Mountain West world to get noticed. It was fine against Utah State, not amazing.
