NCAA Tournament: Sweet 16 South Region
Who’s going to win each Sweet 16 game of the NCAA Tournament? Here are the Fearless Predictions for every game.
How are the predictions so far?
South Region: 8-5 SU, 5-8 ATS
No. 1 Kansas (32-4) vs. No. 5 Maryland (27-8)
Why Kansas Will Win: If Maryland struggles from three like it did against Hawaii, this isn’t going to be pretty. The Rainbow Warriors missed too many makeable plays on the inside – that won’t be a problem for the Jayhawk front line. Phenomenal on the boards against UConn – outrebounding the Huskies 44-24 – Kansas is attacking rebounds and getting plenty of easy points.
Why Maryland Will Win: The talent is there to hang with Kansas. When all the parts are working, this is every bit as good a team in just about all phases. The Terps might turn it over too much, and they don’t make enough defensive plays on the outside, but they make up for it with offensive balance. What wins in March? Great guards, and Melo Trimble and Rasheed Sulaimon are veterans who aren’t going to get rattled.
What’s Going To Happen: I’m going to keep picking against Kansas until I get it right. The Terps are going to get the offensive pop inside and out to move on – the guards will be the difference.
Line: Kansas -7
Prediction: Maryland 81, Kansas 77
No. 2 Villanova (31-5) vs. No. 3 Miami (27-7)
Why Villanova Will Win: The Wildcats shot the lights out against Iowa while clamping down on defense to make it a laugher. Miami doesn’t move the ball all that well to set up easy shots, but the offense knows how to score, but don’t expect any second-chance points. The Hurricanes got destroyed by Wichita State 16-2 on offensive rebounds.
Why Miami Will Win: The Hurricanes aren’t going to let Villanova shoot like it did against Iowa. The Miami O should be able to keep up the pace, but the defense that keeps teams to under 67 points per game and does a good job of getting on the defensive boards should be able to slow things down. The three-point shooting should be strong enough to get back in the game at any point – if needed.
What’s Going To Happen: Is anyone else in the tournament playing with as much confidence as Villanova? Miami has the talent to make this a battle down the stretch, but Villanova has too many weapons.
Line: Villanova -4.5
Prediction: Villanova 71, Miami 66
