Sun Belt football recruiting earns high praise from mysterious ESPN guy
Somebody up there likes the Sun Belt! Yeah, us!
It’s always nice to be noticed. Today was officially Signing Day, but college football now has an early signing period which commences in December. Today, a semi-bearded man on ESPN this morning noted that the Sun Belt (and the Group of Five in general) is a ground-floor, innovative thought-leader in the recruiting of tomorrow.
If you’re too tired from fist-pumping to click the video, here’s a transcription (you’re welcome):
“Go look at Arkansas State, South Florida, Appalachian State and Boise State. Look at the players they signed in the early signing period. Look at the rest of the Group of Five schools. You talk about getting a leg up? Those schools got a significant leg up.”
Yeah, that’s right, Power Five. Eat Sun Belt butt! And the butts of other G5 programs, if you are so inclined. I haven’t bothered to research this guy (mostly because ESPN play-by-pay announcers use live Sun Belt football games to promote the SEC), but the dude has a point. The Sun Belt hauled in 36 Rivals 3-star athletes for 2018 (led by Arkansas State’s eight), five more than last year with one fewer program. Many of those dudes were picked up early while some P5 coaches moaned and groaned.
You do you, Sun Belt! Lock up some good talent while you can. Eventually, the P5 will catch up.
