Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
With no NFL on the first Sunday in September, there’s Texas A&M and UCLA squaring off on one side of the country, and there’s this showdown between the two former Big East rivals who haven’t played since a 34-17 Virginia Tech win in 2005.
Now it’s a big-time non-conference battle that should be a key piece to the my-conference-is-better-than-your-conference debate.
The Big 12 has unfairly been a punching bag at times, but if West Virginia can beat the defending ACC Coastal champs, then it’ll be a fun and perfect September with East Carolina, Delaware State and Kansas to follow.
The ACC is coming off a big year and great bowl season, but can Virginia Tech keep holding up its end of the bargain with a bit of a rebuilding job to do?
Sort of like West Virginia’s situation, get by this, and even with Old Dominion a decent non-conference foe, and the East Carolina game on the road, it’ll almost certainly be a 4-0 start before kicking of ACC play against Clemson.
It’s the start of the Will Grier era at West Virginia, and it’ll be a terrific early test to see just how good the passing game might be. If it all works against a Hokie secondary that should be among the best in the country, then look out Big 12.
The West Virginia defensive front will be just okay, but can the Hokies power up the running game to ease in their new starting quarterback – whomever wins that derby?
This isn’t going to be pretty. The Virginia Tech defense will be the star – Grier won’t go off – but the Hokies O will sputter a bit. It’ll come down to which team makes the most mistakes.
