All You Really Need To Know About Virginia

(ACC) RPI: 18, 5 seed

This isn’t quite as boring a team or a style as some of the recent versions of UVA, but you know what you’re in for. The Cavaliers bring the defense – they lead the nation in scoring D – they don’t make mistakes, they hit their threes and their free throws, and they can grind teams and games down to a dead stop.

The key is to score early and get the Cavs out of their comfort zone. Yeah, they’ll suffocate offenses, but they’ll also keep every game manageable. Hang around, don’t get behind by too much, hit a few big shots – it’s easier said then done.

All You Really Need To Know About UNC-Wilmington

(Colonial Atlantic) RPI: 27, 12 seed

The real deal, the Colonial Athletic regular season and tournament champ hits plenty of threes – averaging 9.6 per game – and wins by not screwing up. Very, very careful with the ball, the Seahawks are among the best in the nation in turnover margin and are phenomenal at making the extra pass to keep things moving.

Defense is optional, but they make up for it by bombing away from the outside. The big concern is the competition, losing to Middle Tennessee early on in one of the only real tests.

What’s Going To Happen

The word you’re looking for if you’re a Virginia fan is yeeeeeeeesh.

There are certain teams Virginia would love to face – particularly those that make a ton of big mistakes and screw around in the backcourt – and that’s not the Seahawks.

UNC Wilmington will shoot its way out of problems, will make the big extra pass, and won’t beat itself. From the line and beyond the arc, it’ll take advantage of every scoring opportunity. That’s a big, big problem for a Cavalier team that’ll keep the score low enough, and the game slow enough, to keep the Seahawks alive.

The Cavaliers will survive and advance, but it’ll be scary.
