Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Middle Tennessee has gotten its licks in.
Just 35 miles apart, it’s only the sixth meeting between the two schools, with the Blue Raiders winning the first three – starting in 2001 – and Vandy taking the last two, including a 37-24 win last season.
But which Commodore offense will show up? Will it be the one that ripped through Ole Miss and Tennessee to close out the season – and Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky early on – or will it be the one that sputtered to 17 points or fewer in eight games?
It should be able to open things up a bit against a shaky Blue Raider defense that’ll have to rely on its own O to pick up the slack.
QB Brent Stockstill and the loaded passing game will be dangerous all season long, but the Blue Raiders will get crushed in time of possession, and won’t be helped by problems running the ball.
Is it possible to get up quickly at home and hope the Vanderbilt offense is the clunker version? Middle Tennessee’s defense won’t be able to handle Ralph Webb and the Commodore ground game, while Vandy’s biggest defensive strength – the secondary – will hold up against Stockstill.
