Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
UCF is starting the regular season with Florida International, and ending it with South Florida. FIU gets Florida Atlantic late in the season. The Group of Five Florida schools are all going to jockey for position and attention, with a whole lot of scrutiny on the coaches and what they’re doing with their respective programs.
In just his second year, UCF head coach Scott Frost is the dean of the group, with Charlie Strong, Lane Kiffin and Butch Davis all new to their jobs. But those new guys are far more accomplished overall – Frost can’t lose a game like this.
And neither can UCF.
With an American Athletic showdown against Memphis up next, and follow it up against Georgia Tech and a trip to Maryland, this could be a rocky run if the Knights can’t pull this off and erase the ugly end to last year – a blowout bowl loss to Arkansas State.
No one’s expecting the world from Davis right away, but he’s got a good enough team back to make the Golden Panthers far more competitive than they were in the 53-14 ugliness of last year’s loss. And if they win? Then it’s Game On for the Davis era.
UCF’s defensive front will come up with a gem in a low-scoring battle for a half – FIU will be good enough to make this more than just competitive. But UCF will have to fight to pull away in the fourth quarter, but it’ll get the win needed to make Frost and his team look like they’re making strides forward.
