Welcome to the first look and picks for the biggest games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
For those of you who really, really enjoyed Stanford’s 41-17 win over Rice to close out the regular season, your dreams are coming true.
It was Christian McCaffrey’s last college football game, running for over 200 yards for a Stanford ground game that did whatever it wanted to. This year, the Cardinal have an even better, stronger team overall, but the key will be what it can do through the air.
Stanford will win easily in Australia – Rice isn’t going to be too much better this time around – but can the passing game get going? Will the quarterback situation be settled with Keller Chryst trying to get back from a knee injury and Ryan Burns – if it’s his gig – trying to get settled?
The offense took a while to get rolling last season, and with a road game at USC coming next, this is the tune-up to get everything humming.
Rice doesn’t have the air show to keep up the pace – especially against the strong Cardinal secondary – but can it grind out just enough good drives to keep this from getting out of hand right away?
Nah. Stanford will do whatever it wants.
After a rocky first half, the Stanford offensive line will take over in the second half – and then Australia will be mad at us for sending them a bad football game.
