What’s The Deal With South Carolina?

Considering the Gamecocks are known mostly for their tough defense and hard-nosed style, they’ve opened it up big-time over the first two games, roaring for 93 points against Marquette and 88 in the bracket-buster over Duke. They forced 18 turnovers to beat the Blue Devils, and they cranked up the offense with 65 points in the second half.

USC doesn’t normally shoot from three, but it hit seven against Duke, and it doesn’t normally move the ball around, but it came up with 16 assists. Coming up with steals and pressuring the ball is its game, and it does a great job of converting on the mistakes. This isn’t a good shooting team, but again, you’d never know it.

What’s The Deal With Baylor?

Baylor was able to hold off the USC charge to get by with a gut-check 82-78 win. The Trojans shot better, they were better from three, and they passed better, but the Bears owned the boards 34-23 with 14 offensive rebounds. There were too many turnovers – 12 – but they got tough in the final few minutes and came up with the right shots at the right times.

Dominated the rebounding margin is nothing new, finishing second in the nation averaging nine more boards a game than their opponents. This isn’t a particularly good shooting team from the outside, but it hits everything in the interior and is great at making the extra pass.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor is showing why it was a No. 1 team in the country for a small part of the season. The South Carolina offense might be cranking it up, but Baylor isn’t going to let anything happen in side and it’ll dominate on the boards.

Here’s the big problem for the Bears. South Carolina is sixth in the nation in turnover margin, and Baylor is 307th. The Gamecocks won’t keep the offense rolling like it was in the first two rounds, but they’ll force just enough mistakes to slip by to keep this magical run rolling.
