Who’s going to start at quarterback for all 130 teams? Where are the battles at the most important position? Here’s every QB situation for every team.

ACC

Boston College

Patrick Towles is gone after a shaky season, but Darius Wade is a decent backup option who saw little time. The dual-threat junior has to fight off Anthony Brown, a great-looking 6-1, 210-passwer who can move.

And the starter will be … Anthony Brown, RFr.
Boston College 2017 Preview

Clemson

Good luck trying to replace Deshaun Watson. It can’t happen right away, but remember, there was concern about replacing Tajh Boyd, and Watson turned out fine. Kelly Bryant looked fantastic this spring and will be the No. 1, but super-recruit Hunter Johnson is ready to step in if needed.

And the starter will be … Kelly Bryant, Jr.
–  Clemson 2017 Preview

Duke

Everything changed after Thomas Sirk announced he was transferring. He’d have been the backup anyway, but now there’s no question that this is Daniel Jones’ offense. He stepped in and threw for over 2,800 yards and 16 scores with 486 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

And the starter will be … Daniel Jones, Soph.
Duke 2017 Preview

Florida State

Deondre Francois went through the wars in his first season, and now he appears ready to be a superstar for a team that’ll need him to rock right away against Alabama. J.J. Cosentino has just enough time in the system to be okay if needed, but there’s plenty of talent waiting in the wings.

And the starter will be … Deondre Francois, Soph.
Florida State 2017 Preview

Georgia Tech

It only seems like Justin Thomas was there since the Calvin Johnson era. Matthew Jordan is the guy as long as he’s past a foot injury suffered this offseason, but in a good way, the backups got a shot to see a little time. The speedy TaQuon Marshall will likely be the No. 2.

And the starter will be … Matthew Jordan, Jr.
Georgia Tech 2017 Preview

Louisville

Yeah, the reigning Heisman winner probably has a relatively firm grip on the gig. Lamar Jackson is the star of stars, but can anyone fill in if something disastrous happens? Kyle Bolin transferred to Rutgers, and now it’ll probably be up to the 6-4, 220-pound Jawon Pass to keep things going if No. 8 goes down.

And the starter will be … Lamar Jackson, Jr.
Louisville 2017 Preview

Miami

It’s not an overstatement to call this the most important quarterback battle in college football going into the season. Get it right, and potentially win the Coastal Division – and the ACC. Malik Rosier will likely get the first chance at replacing Brad Kaaya, but N’Kosi Perry is one of the nation’s top recruits, with the talent to potentially take over right away.

And the starter will be … Malik Rosier, Jr.
Miami 2017 Preview

North Carolina

How do you replace Mitchell Trubisky, who replaced Marquise Williams, and keep the amazing quarterback play going? You get the guy who stunk it up for LSU and got pushed aside by a Purdue castoff. Brandon Harris transferred in, but he’s not the sure-thing to start with Chazz Surratt, Logan Byrd and Nathan Elliott all fighting for time.

And the starter will be … Brandon Harris, Sr.
North Carolina 2017 Preview

NC State

Former Boise State transfer Ryan Finley was terrific at times last year, throwing for well over 3,000 yards and 18 scores, while running just enough to be fine. 6-5, 221-pound Jalen McLendon got in a little time last year, but he only threw one touchdown pass with four picks.

And the starter will be … Ryan Finley, Jr.
NC State 2017 Preview

Pitt

Lose Nathan Peterman, bring in Max Browne, The former USC starting quarterback’s only real problem was not being Sam Darnold, but he’s a smart, good talent who should keep the Pitt passing game rolling. 6-5, 225-pound redshirt freshman Thomas MacVittie will likely be groomed as the starter for the near future.

And the starter will be … Max Browne, Sr.
Pitt 2017 Preview

Syracuse

Can Eric Dungey stay in one piece? He was outstanding before getting knocked out against Clemson late in the year, but if he’s right, he’ll put up massive numbers this year. If anything happens, Zack Mahoney will step in again after thawing for 943 yards and eight scores in a fill-in role.

And the starter will be … Eric Dungey, Jr.
Syracuse 2017  Preview

Virginia

It’ll be interesting, Kurt Benkert is the heady veteran who took over last year throwing for 2,552 yards and 21 scores with 11 pick. Missouri transfer Marvin Zanders had a far bigger upside and brought far greater mobility, but chose to leave.

And the starter will be … Kurt Benkert, Sr.
Virginia 2017 Preview

Virginia Tech

It would’ve been really, really nice if Jerod Evans didn’t bolt early for the NFL, but being head coach Justin Fuente’s quarterback is a good job no matter who gets it. There should be an entertaining battle, with Josh Jackson a star dual-threat prospect who’ll have to hold off Nebraska transfer A.J. Bush, star recruit Hendon Hooker, and former Kansas starter Ryan Willis.

And the starter will be … Josh Jackson, RFr.
Virginia Tech 2017 Preview

Wake Forest

John Wolford had an okay season as a part of the overall puzzle, but he threw just nine touchdown passes with ten picks. However, he took off for 521 yards and six scores. Kendall Hinton was the starter before suffering a knee injury. He’s the starter, but Wolford is No. 1A.

And the starter will be … Kendal Hinton, Jr.
Wake Forest 2017 Preview

American Athletic

Cincinnati

Hayden Moore has to cut down on the interceptions, but he was the team’s leading passer – even though Gunner Kiel gave it a shot with the season going down the tubes. Now Moore has to fight off Ross Trail, with the winner getting to crank up the new offense that’s going to go 100 miles per hour. The starter will be a statistical superstar.

And the starter will be … Hayden Moore, Jr.
Cincinnati 2017 Preview

Connecticut

The offensive production can’t be any worse, and it probably won’t be with new/old head coach Randy Edsall’s return to the program. Bryant Shirreffs wasn’t miserable, but he only threw seven touchdown passes with six picks, while running for over 500 yards. Donovan Williams got hurt, but he’s in the equation, while JUCO transfer David Pindell will get every shot in the new high-octane attack.

And the starter will be … Bryant Shirreffs, Sr.
UConn 2017 Preview

East Carolina

Thomas Sirk left Duke, and now he’s expected to fill in the gap for an offense that needs to kickstart everything back up. He’s trying to get past an Achilles tendon injury, and he has to fight off junior Gardner Minshew, but if he’s right, he’s a difference-maker.

And the starter will be … Thomas Sirk, Sr.
East Carolina 2017 Preview

Houston

Kyle Allen wasn’t a bust for Texas A&M, but the former No. 1 overall recruit – at least the top quarterback prospect according to most services – didn’t do what he was supposed to in the Kevin Sumlin attack. Now he has to get the Major Applewhite era off to a hot start, but D’Eriq King will see plenty of reps.

And the starter will be … Kyle Allen, Jr.
Houston 2017 Preview

Memphis

Is Riley Ferguson growing into a good pro prospect? No one’s expecting him to be Paxton Lynch – he doesn’t have the bulk-size – but he’s coming off a terrific season throwing for close to 3,700 yards with 32 scores. There’s no experience behind him, though, with redshirt freshman David Moore needing reps.

And the starter will be … Riley Ferguson, Sr.
Memphis 2017 Preview

Navy

Injuries late in the season turned into a slight positive for the future of the Navy offense, with Zach Abey getting in some reps over the final key games. A bigger, thicker Navy QB than most of the quicker versions, he ran for 384 yards and six scores in a short time, and threw for 352 yards with four picks and an interception. Freshman Malcolm Perry is more of the jitterbug option type as the likely main backup.

And the starter will be … Zach Abey, Soph.
Navy 2017 Preview

SMU

Can Ben Hicks be better after logging in time as a freshman? He threw for 19 touchdowns and bombed for almost 3,000 yards, but he also gave up 15 interceptions. Hardly a lock to keep the job, Arkansas transfer Rate Peavey and D.J. Gillens will get some work.

And the starter will be … Ben Hicks, Soph.
SMU 2017 Preview

Temple

So who’s going to replace AAC conference champion quarterback Phillips Walker? It’ll be sophomore Logan Marchi, or junior Frank Nutile, or key recruit Todd Centeio, or bomber Anthony Russo. Spin the wheel on the QB derby going into the fall, with Nutile the safe call and the mobile Marchi a dangerous option.

And the starter will be … Logan Marchi, Soph,
Temple 2017 Preview

Tulane

So who’s going to get the option attack rolling? Glen Cuiellette got in work last year, and Johnathan Brantley is a new option, but if this thing is going to fly, Kansas State transfer Jonathan Banks is the right guy – there’s a reason he made the move. Very quick, he took over the offense and should shine right away.

And the starter will be … Jonathan Banks, Jr.
Tulane 2017 Preview

Tulsa

With Ryan Rubley transferring to Augustana, The door is open for Chad President to take over for Tulsa all-time leading passer Dane Evans. President is a runner with a great arm, but Luke Skipper – a dual-threat star – will be in the fight, too.

And the starter will be … Chad President, Soph.
Tulsa 2017 Preview

UCF

McKenzie Milton took over the job for Justin Holman last year and turned into the likely starter of the future. He’s a smallish, quick passer who needs to be more accurate, but he can take off and run a little bit. 6-3, 215-pound Darriel Mack is an option, but it’s Milton’s job – for now.

And the starter will be … McKenzie Milton, Soph.
UCF 2017 Preview

USF

If Quinton Flowers isn’t the best player in the American Athletic Conference this year, he won’t be far off. He’s a 4.4 speed running back playing QB – and he can lead, and he can throw. There’s no experience behind him, though, and he’s going to take several big shots.

And the starter will be … Quinton Flowers, Jr.
USF 2017 Preview

Big 12

Baylor

With Jarrett Stidham going off to be an Auburn Tiger, the door is open for Zach Smith to take the job by the horns after stepping into the void last season. However, Arizona transfer Anu Solomon is a talented option with good mobility, and Charlie Brewer is a young option, but …

And the starter will be … Zach Smith, Soph.
Baylor 2017 Preview

Iowa State

The situation got cleared up in a big way. Last year’s rotation is now a one-man show with Jacob Park owning the job now. And why? Joel Lanning went from being a good, tough part of the equation to a whale of a middle linebacker with all-star upside.

And the starter will be … Jacob Park, Jr.
Iowa State 2017 Preview

Kansas

Everyone took off. Montell Cozart bolted for Boise State, and Ryan Willis took off to be part of the logjam of options at Virginia Tech. Former Washington State Cougar Peyton Bender transferred over and should be a great bomber if he can hold off Carter Stanley, who saw a little time last season.

And the starter will be … Peyton Bender, Jr.
Kansas 2017 Preview

Kansas State

Jesse Ertz stayed healthy and showed just how good he could be. Now he’s the Kansas State heart-and-soul star of the offense. Alex Delton is a nice-looking backup option who can move.

And the starter will be … Jesse Ertz, Sr.
Kansas State 2017 Preview

Oklahoma

Baker Mayfield will be deep in the Heisman hunt, but he might not turn out to be the most talented quarterback on the roster. One-time Texas A&M super-recruit Kyler Murray will fight it out with Austin Kendall for the No. 2 job – and the 2018 starting gig.

And the starter will be … Baker Mayfield, Sr.
Oklahoma 2017 Preview

Oklahoma State

OSU head coach Mike Gundy has never been afraid to rotate his quarterbacks, but he’s not taking Mason Rudolph of the field. Rudolph might not be rated as highly as Sam Darnold or Josh Allen by the NFL types, but he’s not all that far behind. Waiting in the wings is Keondre Wudtee, a tall, thin passer who can run a wee bit.

And the starter will be … Mason Rudolph, Sr.
Oklahoma State 2017 Preview

TCU

Can former Texas A&M transfer Kenny Hill be more consistent? He wasn’t the problem last year, but he wasn’t quite as dominant as he needed to be. It’s his offense to run, while Grayson Muehlstein is a solid veteran backup option.

And the starter will be … Kenny Hill, Sr.
TCU 2017 Preview

Texas

Shane Buechele is the absolutely, positively, no question about it starter for new head man Tom Herman … maybe. Herman wasn’t shy about expressing his love and affection for star recruit Sam Ehlinger, who might get a shot if Buechele isn’t getting things moving. There’s no 18-wheeler, Tyrone Swoopes around anymore to bang it in from the goal line.

And the starter will be … Shane Buechele, Soph.
Texas 2017 Preview

Texas Tech

No big deal. Just replace Patrick Mahomes, the most talented pro quarterback to play in the Texas Tech system since it turned into this. Nic Shimonek is the next man up, but the 6-3, 225-pounder doesn’t have the same arm as Mahomes – no one does – while JUCO transfer McLane Carter is a big bomber who’ll be groomed for next year.

And the starter will be … Nic Shimonek, Sr.
Texas Tech 2017 Preview

West Virginia

Okay, Will Grier, are you ready to finally do this? The Florida transfer is supposed to not only step in for Skyler Howard, but make the position even stronger. Chris Chugunov is a nice No. 2 option, but the season is all about Grier’s production.

And the starter will be … Will Grier, Jr.
West Virginia 2017 Preview

Quarterback Rankings & Situations
AAC | ACC | Big Ten | Big 12 | C-USA
IND | MAC | MW | Pac-12 | SEC | Sun Belt

Big Ten

Illinois

It might be the Big Ten’s most watched holding pattern. Virginia Tech transfer Dwayne Lawson has to take care of a few issues with his grades after going the JUCO route, but he’s expected to be ready to roll. If so, the Illini have a difference-maker who can automatically become a factor. If not. it’ll be Chayce Crouch giving it a shot and Jeff George Jr. – who started a stretch of last year – to see time as the main backup.

And the starter will be … Dwayne Lawson, Jr.
Illinois 2017 Preview

Indiana

Richard Lagow might have thrown too many picks – 17 of them – but he’s a good bomber who’ll keep the pressure on. Zander Diamont is gone, and now it’ll likely be up to redshirt freshman Peyton Ramsey to step in it Lagow goes down.

And the starter will be … Richard Lagow, Sr.
Indiana 2017 Preview

Iowa

C.J. Beathard is gone after an underwhelming final year, and now it’ll be a fight through the summer for the starting gig. Sophomore Nathan Stanley is a 6-5 veteran backup with the arm to push the ball down the field more, while junior Tyler Wiegers is another 6-5 big-armed passer with a world of upside.

And the starter will be … Nathan Stanley, Soph.
Iowa 2017 Preview

Maryland

Is the superstar ready? Top recruit Kasim Hill might still have to earn the gig with so many other potions to fight through, but while Caleb Henderson is a good talent, Max Bortenschlager is a big passer and Tyrrell Pigrome is a dangerous all-around prospect, but Hill is the one who might turn Maryland into a much, much bigger thing. He’ll eventually be the starter this year, but to kick things off, it’ll probably be …

And the starter will be … Caleb Henderson, Jr.
Maryland 2017 Preview

Michigan

Considering the Wolverines return almost no one who starters for more than a game or two last year, having a veteran like Wilton Speight should be a huge help. The receiving corps has talent, but it’s really, really young – that’s where Speight comes in. Veteran backup John O’Korn – the one-time Houston transfer – and freshman Brandon Peters aren’t bad reserve options. Watch out, though, for Peters to be given his chances for more than just the No. 2 job.

And the starter will be … Wilton Speight, Jr.
Michigan 2017 Preview

Michigan State

Okay, Brian Lewerke. The job appears to be yours, now stay in one piece and make the offense better. Damion Terry is an easy option to work in a few reps from time to time, but Lewerke should be the one who tries to make the Spartans good at college football again.

And the starter will be … Brian Lewerke, Soph.
Michigan State 2017 Preview

Minnesota

With longtime starter Mitch Leidner gone, new head man P.J. Fleck has to come up with his guy to build around. Conor Rhoda has been the backup who waited his turn, and he should be okay right away. The 6-3, 215-pounder can do a little of everything, but Demry Croft is an interesting option for the future, if he doesn’t win the job right away.

And the starter will be … Conor Rhoda, Sr.
Minnesota 2017 Preview

Nebraska

Tommy Armstrong was the heart and soul of the program for the last few years, but he was also banged up late last year. The results weren’t pretty when he was gone, and now it’ll be a fight for his job. Tristan Gebbia will eventually be the star, but he’s just a true freshman, while former Tulane transfer Tanner Lee should be ready to go now. Patrick O’Brien had a good enough offseason to be in the mix, too, but …

And the starter will be … Tanner Lee, Jr.
Nebraska 2017 Preview

Northwestern

Can Clayton Thorson really turn into an interesting pro prospect? He looked the part last year as he matured into more of a big-time passer. Now this is his offense with a world of upside to do even more. Senior Matt Alviti has been around long enough to be an okay No. 2 option if disaster strikes.

And the starter will be … Clayton Thorson, Jr.
Northwestern 2017 Preview

Ohio State

While the Buckeye faithful will be howling for star recruit Tate Martell, or likely No. 2 backup Joe Burrow, or Dwayne Haskins if J.T. Barrett struggles … no. Ohio State has one of the best all-around veteran quarterbacks in the country, and he’ll have to make everyone around him better. Again.

And the starter will be … J.T. Barrett, Sr.
Ohio State 2017 Preview

Penn State

Trace McSorley grew into a special playmaker who led the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten title. He’s firmly entrenched as the starter, with sophomore Tommy Stevens a 6-4, 225-pound passer being groomed as the No. 2.

And the starter will be … Trace McSorley, Jr.
Penn State 2017 Preview

Purdue

David Blough might soon be known as more than the guy who forced Danny Etling to leave for LSU and Austin Appleby to take off for Florida. With Jeff Brohm as the new head coach, the numbers will soon go through the roof. 6-4, 225-pound sophomore Elijah Sindelar will be the main backup.

And the starter will be … David Blough, Jr.
Purdue 2017 Preview

Rutgers

It’s one of the Big Ten’s most interesting quarterback situations. Louisville transfer Kyle Bolin is coming in with Lamar Jackson the obvious star for the Cardinals, but Giovanni Rescigno is a veteran who’ll get another shot at taking back his job. The wild-card, though, is Johnathan Lewis, the star recruit who fans are going to want to see as soon as possible.

And the starter will be … Kyle Bolin, Sr.
Rutgers 2017 Preview

Wisconsin

The Badgers missed out on the Malik Zaire derby – he committed to Florida -but that’s hardly a bad thing. The more work Alex Hornibrook gets, the better. However, he got knocked around a bit last year – UW need 6-2, 225-pound redshirt freshman Kare Lyles to be ready.

And the starter will be … Alex Hornibrook, Soph.
Wisconsiin 2017 Preview

Conference USA

Charlotte

After the controversy and problems with one of last year’s starters Kevin Olsen – he’s gone now – it’s up to Hasaan Klugh to handle the work. He needs to be more accurate, but he has plenty of upside. 6-2, 205-pound junior Brooks Barden will be the No. 2.

And the starter will be … Hasaan Klugh, Jr.
Charlotte 2017 Preview

Florida Atlantic

Florida State controversial transfer De’Andre Johnson could and should be one of the best quarterbacks in Conference USA once he gets rolling, but junior Jason Driskel will get every shot at being Lane Kiffin’s starter.

And the starter will be … De’Andre Johnson, Soph.
FAU 2017 Preview

Florida International

Alex McGough needs to be better, but he’s a veteran starter who’ll lead things off for the Butch Davis era. He’s been around long enough to be fine, while 6-3, 220-pound sophomore Christian Alexander will be groomed to be next year’s main man.

And the starter will be … Alex McGough, Sr.
FIU 2017 Preview

Louisiana Tech

Who gets to replace 4,617-yard, 41 touchdown passer Ryan Higgins? J’Mar Smith was the top backup last year and did a great job in his limited time, but he doesn’t have the same great receiving corps to work with.

And the starter will be … J’Mar Smith, Soph.
Louisiana Tech 2017 Preview

Marshall

Chase Litton did what he could in a bad year, throwing for 2,612 yards and 24 scores, and now he has to be the star of an offense that has to do far more. Garet Morrell is a 6-3, 205-pounder who’ll have to wait his turn for a few years.

And the starter will be … Chase Litton, Jr.
Marshall 2017 Preview

Middle Tennessee

When healthy, Brent Stockstill is among the most productive quarterbacks in college football. He threw for 3,233 yards and 31 scores in ten games of work, while sophomore John Urzua did a nice job when he had to, throwing for 816 yards and eight scores, but with eight touchdowns.

And the starter will be … Brent Stockstill, Jr.
Middle Tennessee 2017 Preview

North Texas

Mason Fine took over in the middle of last season and played well, but a shoulder problem kept him out late in the season. While he’s experienced, walk-on Quinn Shanbour will push for time and could take over with a great fall camp.

And the starter will be … Mason Fine, Soph.
North Texas 2017 Preview

Old Dominion

David Washington was one of the keys to a huge 2016, but now he’s gone meaning Blake LaRussa needs to become a star. He’s only 5-10 and 185 pounds, but he can throw. He has to hold off junior Shuler Bentley, another baller with 6-1, 210-pound size.

And the starter will be … Blake LaRussa, Soph.
Old Dominion 2017 Preview

Rice

With Tyler Stehling done, it’s going to be a battle going into the fall between sophomores Jackson Tyner and J.T. Granato along with freshman Sam Glaesmann. Tyner has the most experience, but Tyner is the more talented option. The 6-3, 210-pound Glaesmann is a big option along with the 6-3, 220-pound Granato and the larger 6-5, 220-pound Tyner.

And the starter will be … Jackson Tyner, Soph.
Rice 2017 Preview

Southern Miss

Who’s taking over for Nick Mullens? Sophomore Keon Howard will be the first option, but JUCO transfer Kwadra Griggs is a large bomber who can keep the passing game going. The 6-1, 205-pound Howard is more of a dual-threat playmaker.

And the starter will be … Keon Howard, Soph.
Southern Miss 2017 Preview

UAB

It’s a new era for UAB football, and it might take a little while to find the right guy to build around. Former JUCO transfer A.J. Erdely is a 6-4, 224-pounder who can open up the passing game, while 6-1, 213-pound Tyler Johnston had a great offseason adding more mobility to the equation.

And the starter will be … A.J. Erdely, Jr.
UAB 2017 Preview

UTEP

Former Fresno State Bulldog Zack Greenlee is a potentially dangerous baller who might get a shot as the season goes on, but the job will be all Ryan Metz’s if he’s effective. He connected on 65% of his passes with 14 touchdowns with four picks, but after throwing for close to 700 yards, Greenlee is a veteran who can step in.

And the starter will be … Ryan Metz, Jr.
UTEP 2017 Preview

UTSA

While he might not be the most talented playmaker, senior Dalton Sturm proved he could lead the offense and be effective, throwing for 20 touchdowns and just six picks. Behind him are five underclassmen in a fight for the No. 2 job – and the early edge on 2018.

And the starter will be … Dalton Sturm, Sr.
UTSA 2017 Preview

Western Kentucky

The return of Mike White for his senior season eases the transition from the Jeff Brohm era. The 6-4, 225-pounder threw for 4,363 yards and 37 scores, and now he’ll be needed more than ever with a slew of new receivers to work with – and a new head coach.

And the starter will be … Mike White, Sr.
WKU 2017 Preview

Independents

Army

The Black Knights have a great situation with a veteran in Ahmad Bradshaw to run the option and Chris Carter a good veteran who stepped in and averaged over six yards per shot when he stepped in. Bradshaw won’t throw all that well – he hit just 44% of his throws with four TDs and one picks – but he knows how to handle the attack.

And the starter will be … Ahmad Bradshaw, Sr.
Army 2017  Preview

BYU

It was a great situation last season with Taysom Hill back at his gig after getting knocked out in 2015, but Tanner Mangum was a more-than-capable backup after pulling off several magical wins two years ago. The 6-1 Beau Hoge needs time as the No. 2.

And the starter will be … Tanner Mangum, Jr.
BYU 2017 Preview

Massachusetts

Ross Comis was supposed to be the man, but he suffered a torn ACL. He’s back, but Andrew Ford put in a good year as the starter with 26 touchdown passes. At the very least, UMass has options to get the offense going.

And the starter will be … Andrew Ford, Jr.
UMass 2017 Preview

Notre Dame

DeShone Kizer is a Cleveland Brown, and Malik Zaire is a Florida Gator. Brandon Wimbush could turn into a better college player than either of the two, with a huge arm and great quickness to get the offense rolling. 6-0, 205-pound sophomore Ian Book is more of a passer, and he needs time and work.

And the starter will be … Brandon Wimbush, Jr.
ND 2017 Preview

MAC

Akron

Thomas Woodson had some good moments throwing for close to 2,100 yards with 18 scores and six picks, but he missed several games hurt. Backup Tra’Von Chapman is moving to receiver, opening the door for a battle for the No. 2 gig.

And the starter will be … Thomas Woodson, Sr.
Akron 2017 Preview

Ball State

Riley Neal knows how to handle the up-tempo offense, and while he’s accurate, he has to push the ball more down the field. Jack Milas is a solid veteran who could take over without a problem if needed.

And the starter will be … Riley Neal, Jr.
Ball State 2017 Preview

Bowling Green

It was a rough transition from the passing game juggernaut of 2015, but James Morgan got his feet wet in his first year, throwing for almost 2,100 yards and 16 scores. The three top backup options are all freshmen.

And the starter will be … James Morgan, Soph.
Bowling Green 2017 Preview

Buffalo

The mobile, 6-7 Tyree Jackson is an interesting quarterback with the upside to do a little of everything for a UB attack that needs playmakers. The 6-5 Drew Anderson saw a little time as the main backup. Both Bulls QBs have huge arms.

And the starter will be … Tyree Jackson, Soph.
Buffalo 2017 Preview

Central Michigan

Gone is Cooper Rush, who didn’t quite come up with the big season expected, but was still a longtime starter who put up big numbers. In comes for Michigan super-recruit Shane Morris, who’s looking to play in his final year. Tommy Lazzaro is a JUCO transfer looking for the starting gig.

And the starter will be … Shane Morris, Sr.
CMU 2017 Preview

Eastern Michigan

Brogan Roback led the way to EMU’s breakthrough season throwing for close to 2,700 yards and 18 scores. Senior Todd Porter is a decent veteran who saw action in five games last year, throwing for 1,064 yards and seven scores.

And the starter will be … Brogan Roback, Sr.
Eastern Michigan 2017 Preview

Kent State

Will Nick Holley play quarterback or wide receiver? Junior George Bollas is a 6-3 veteran backup who struggled in his eight games of work last year, and RB Myles Washington might end up taking over the spot to bring more athleticism to the position.

And the starter will be … George Bollas, Jr.
Kent State 2017 Preview

Miami University

Gus Ragland turned into one of the MAC’s top superstars over the second half of last season, and now he comes into the season as one of the bright, shining hopes for the resurgence of the RedHawk program. Billy Bahl did an okay job over the first part of the year, but he didn’t lead the way to wins.

And the starter will be … Gus Ragland, Jr.
Miami Univ. 2017 Preview

Northern Illinois

A disaster over the last few years thanks to a slew of injuries, now there’s hope for a turnaround if Ryan Graham can stay in one piece after getting knocked out with a leg injury. Daniel Santacaterina has seen time over the last few years, and Marcus Childers is a good-looking redshirt freshman who can run.

And the starter will be … Ryan Graham, Jr.
Northern Illinois 2017 Preview

Ohio

The Bobcat passing game has to be better. Quinton Maxwell is a 6-3, 223-pound talent with a world of upside to grow further into the job after rotating with Greg Windham. Windham is gone, and now Nathan Rourke comes in from the JUCO ranks to push for time.

And the starter will be … Quinton Maxwell, Soph.
Ohio 2017 Preview

Toledo

Logan Woodside is coming off a massive season, hitting 69% of his passes for 4,129 yards and 45 scores. Expect more of the same, while 6-5, 232-pound Michael Julian only threw five passes last season. He’s a senior – Toledo needs to develop a few young options.

And the starter will be … Logan Woodside, Sr.
Toledo 2017 Preview

Western Michigan

How do you replace a smart, veteran leader like Zach Terrell, who threw for 3,533 yards and 33 touchdowns and just four interceptions? Tom Flacco – Joe Flacco’s brother – is set to step in after getting a little bit of time here and there over the last few season. He’ll add some mobility to the position, while Jon Wassink has all the tools to potentially be the main man.

And the starter will be … Tom Flacco, Jr.
Western Michigan 2017 Preview

Mountain West

Air Force

Arion Worthman was a decent enough passer to get by, and finished third on the team in rushing in just eight games of work. Nate Romine is a veteran option who’ll be a terrific backup if he doesn’t take back his starting gig. Air Force is in great shape either way.

And the starter will be … QB Arion Worthman, Jr.
Air Force 2017 Preview

Boise State

Even in a league with Wyoming’s Josh Allen ripping it up, Brett Rypien was the First Team All-Mountain West quarterback. He threw for 3,646 yards and 24 scores and eight picks. Former JUCO transfer Thomas Stuart saw a wee bit of time and will be the main backup.

And the starter will be … Brett Rypien, Jr.
Boise State 2017 Preview

Colorado State

Nick Stevens is a big-time passer who should put up massive numbers one he found his groove. Coming off a big season, he’ll be in line for All-Mountain West honors. 6-5, 210-pound sophomore Collin Hill saw just enough time last year to be an okay fill-in if needed.

And the starter will be … Nick Stevens, Sr.
Colorado State 2017 Preview

Fresno State

Can Chason Virgil blow up in the Jeff Tedford offense? He’s an accurate passer, but he doesn’t have the big bomber size. It’ll be his job to handle the pro-style attack, but the backup option is … ? It’s going to be a battle among JUCO transfers Christian Rossi and Jorge Reyna to be Virgil’s backup.

And the starter will be … Chason Virgil, Soph.
Fresno State 2017 Preview

Hawaii

Dru Brown made his share of mistakes, but he also took to the Nick Rolovich offense and got the team to a bowl win. He’s most likely the team’s main man for the next few years, while 6-3, 210-pound Aaron Zwahlen will battle for the backup job.

And the starter will be … Dru Brown, Jr.
Hawaii 2017 Preview

Nevada

Alabama transfer David Cornwell will step in as the main man for the new coaching staff and the Air Raid style of offense – expect the passing numbers to get cranked up in a hurry. Junior Ty Gangi might be just good enough to be close to the starting spot after throwing for 1,301 yards and eight scores, but Cornwell wouldn’t have come to Reno if he wasn’t going to be the likely starter.

And the starter will be … David Cornwell, Jr.
Nevada 2017 Preview

New Mexico

Lamar Jordan continues to be among the nation’s most exciting quarterbacks with the ball in his hands. He’s not built to take a pounding, but he’s extremely quick. 6-0, 205-pound junior JaJuan Lawson is another dangerous runner who saw a little time last year.

And the starter will be … Lamar Jordan, Sr.
New Mexico 2017 Preview

San Diego State

Christian Chapman didn’t have to do a whole lot of heavy lifting last year, but he has a good enough receiving corps to work with to start doing more. It’s a limited stable behind him, with 6-0, 190-pound sophomore Ryan Agnew the top backup option.

And the starter will be … Christian Chapman, Jr.
San Diego State 2017 Preview

San Jose State

The Spartan passing game has to get going from the start under the new coaching staff. Sophomore Josh Love spent last year as the main backup, but he got in a little bit of work throwing five picks with two touchdown passes. Montel Aaron is a 6-5, 210-pounder with a tremendous arm.

And the starter will be … Josh Love, Soph.
San Jose State 2017 Preview

UNLV

Is the young guy ready to roll? Former Nebraska transfer Johnny Stanton has a ton of skill, and Kurt Palandech turned into the top starter last year, but 6-5, 225-pound Armani Rogers is the potential all-around star who’s supposed to be the savior.

And the starter will be … Armani Rogers, RFr.
UNLV 2017 Preview

Utah State

It only seems like Kent Myers has been around for forever. In his final year, he should be more accurate, with the mobility and moxie to do more for the Aggie attack. Oregon transfer Damion Hubbs is a 6-2, 225-pounder who fits the offense, too.

And the starter will be … Kent Myers, Sr.
Utah State 2017 Preview

Wyoming

Josh Allen went from being a nice prospect to the possible No. 1 overall draft pick – he might have been that in the 2017 NFL Draft and could be next year. He’s the star, while 6-4, 229-pound junior Nick Smith looks like yet another future pro prospect

And the starter will be … Josh Allen, Jr.

Arizona

With Anu Solomon taking off for Baylor, Brandon Dawkins should have the full-time job. Maybe. He took over late last season, and while he was great running the ball, he struggled throwing it – to be nice. Khalil Tate wasn’t much better, but he’s neck-and-neck with Dawkins for the gig.

And the starter will be … Brandon Dawkins, Jr.
Arizona 2017 Preview

Arizona State

It’ll be a fascinating fight up until the start of the season. Manny Wilkins wasn’t awful last season, but he didn’t lead the way to wins over the second half of the year. He’s got the talent and the experience, but he’ll likely take a back seat to Alabama transfer Blake Barnett. A great get this offseason, Barnett has the talent to be the best passer yet under head coach Todd Graham.

And the starter will be … Blake Barnett, Soph.
Arizona State 2017 Preview

California

It’s not the Cal situation of the past under Sonny Dykes. With a new coaching staff trying to balance things out a bit, the passing game won’t be quite as dominant. Sophomore Ross Bowers is a pure passer who might not be Davis Webb, but he can throw. Chase Forrest is another pro-style passer who could fit in, but he’ll likely be battling with redshirt freshman Max Gilliam for the backup spot.

And the starter will be … Ross Bowers, Soph.
Cal 2017 Preview

Colorado

As good as Sefo Liufau was, he couldn’t stay in one piece. Stephen Montez stepped in and was terrific at times, but he needs more time – he wasn’t accurate enough. He’s a great passer who can move, while 6-4, 215-pound redshirt freshman Sam Noyer will be groomed as the top backup.

And the starter will be … Stephen Montez, Soph.
Colorado 2017 Preview

Oregon

New head man Willie Taggart has his guy. Justin Hebert took his lumps after taking over the job midway though last year, and now, even in a conference will plenty of top QBs, the Ducks have a standout. 6-3, 215-pound sophomore Travis Jonsen is a fantastic dual-threat option as the main backup.

And the starter will be … Justin Hebert, Soph.
Oregon 2017 Preview

Oregon State

Marcus McMaryion was the best option last season, throwing for a team high 1,286 yards and ten scores with five picks. He’s a good runner who was deadly accurate at times over the second half of the year, but he’ll likely have to take a backseat to 6-7, 230-pound Idaho transfer Jake Luton.

And the starter will be … Jake Luton, Jr.
Oregon State 2017 Preview

Stanford

Ryan Burns dabbled with the idea of transferring, but he chose to stick around. Can he and/or will be be the guy who can lead the way if Keller Chryst’s injured knee isn’t ready to go? K.J. Costello could slide into the starting role with a great fall practice run. Flip a coin, but …

And the starter will be … Ryan Burns, Sr.
Stanford 2017 Preview

UCLA

When healthy, Josh Rosen is one of the nation’s best quarterbacks and a likely top ten overall NFL Draft pick if he chooses to come out next year. But what happens if he gets hurt again? Devon Modster is an interesting young backup, but the Bruins season hinges on whether or not The Rosen One is back to form.

And the starter will be … Josh Rosen, Jr.
UCLA 2017 Preview

USC

Last year’s season-starter Max Browne is now slinging it for Pitt. Jalen Greene is an interesting option – the left-hander saw time at receiver – but Jack Sears the star prospect who’ll be groomed for the near future. Oh yeah – and the Trojans have the presumptive favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

And the starter will be … Sam Darnold, Soph.
USC 2017 Preview

Utah

Alabama transfer Cooper Bateman was a one-time star recruit – and some thought he might end up taking over the starting job in each of the last two seasons. Now he’ll likely be a wide receiver for the Utes. Troy Williams is a good veteran, but he has to be better and more consistent. Former Florida Player of the Year Tyler Huntley will be the backup.

And the starter will be … Troy Williams, Sr.
Utah 2017 Preview

Washington

The rise of Jake Browning into one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers was a big reason Washington went from good to Pac-12 Champion fantastic. He’s obviously the star again, while junior K.J. Carta-Samuels is a decent enough prospect to step in and keep things going if disaster strikes.

And the starter will be … Jake Browning, Jr.
Washington 2017 Preview

Washington State

It was a massive coup for the program to get Luke Falk back for another year to run the Mike Leach offense. However, losing good backup Peyton Bender to Kansas – where he’ll likely start – stinks. It’ll likely be up to 6-3, 217-pound sophomore Tyler Hilinski to be ready to roll if Falk goes down.

And the starter will be … Luke Falk, Sr.
Wazzu 2017 Preview

SEC

Alabama

While there might be chatter about super-recruit Tua Tagovailoa is Jalen Hurts struggles early on … nah. Former key recruits are doing big things elsewhere, with David Cornwell expected to start at Nevada, Blake Barnett will likely get the call at Arizona State, and Cooper Bateman is pushing for a receiver job at Utah. Hurts is really good, and he’ll show why again this year.

And the starter will be … Jalen Hurts, Soph.
Alabama 2017 Preview

Arkansas

Austin Allen did a terrific job of keeping the passing attack going after his brother, Brandon, threw for ten more yards the year before. 6-2, 212-pound sophomore Ty Storey got a wee bit of work last year, and now he’ll be groomed to be the starter for 2018.

And the starter will be … Austin Allen, Sr.
Arkansas 2017 Preview

Auburn

It was one of the biggest transfers of the offseason. Former Baylor starter Jarrett Stidham will take over the starting job, but Sean White is a veteran who always seems to find his way onto the field. In a true emergency – or in a few funky packages – John Franklin III could move from receivers back to under center.

And the starter will be … Jarrett Stidham, Soph.
Auburn 2017 Preview

Florida

Just when it seemed like Feleipe Franks was about to get a shot to grow into the starting job, everything changed. Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire signed on, but can he take over with only a few fall practices to show what he can do? Kyle Trask is still in the hunt for at least the No. 2 job, while last year’s starter Luke Del Rio will at least still be around once he gets healthy.

And the starter will be … Malik Zaire, Sr.
Florida 2017 Preview

Georgia

Here’s the thing – if it’s not Jacob Eason, then was his freshman season of seasoning a waste of an investment? He saw the SEC wars, and he was fine for a true freshman. However, Jake Fromm will get every opportunity to jump in and take over if Eason isn’t sharp.

And the starter will be … Jacob Eason, Soph.
Georgia 2017 Preview

Kentucky

Stephen Johnson turned in a major performance to beat Louisville late in the year, but can be consistently great for an entire season? He’ll get his shot to do even more with the starting gig, while veteran Drew Barker is a terrific backup option.

And the starter will be … Stephen Johnson, Sr.
Kentucky 2017 Preview

LSU

While last year’s Week One starter Brandon Harris is off to North Carolina, former Purdue transfer Danny Etling is even more firmly entrenched as the starter. He might not be anything more than serviceable, but he’s experienced. Lefty Justin McMillan needs time and reps to show what he can do.

And the starter will be … Danny Etling, Sr.
LSU 2017 Preview

Mississippi State

There isn’t a whole lot of quarterbacking star power in the SEC compared to the Pac-12 or Big 12, but there are plenty of very good ones. Nick Fitzgerald could be the best of the bunch. A very tall, very mobile all-around threat the hype will quickly kick in as the season approaches. 6-4, 222-pound Keytaon Thompson os the star of the near future.

And the starter will be … Nick Fitzgerald, Jr.
Mississippi State 2017 Preview

Missouri

It would’ve been interesting if Marvin Zanders didn’t transfer – first to Virginia, now to … Vandy? – but Drew Lock is coming off a big sophomore season and should rise up and be an even more important playmaker. 6-4, 215-pound Jack Lowary looks the part of another top Mizzou passer.

And the starter will be … Drew Lock, Jr.
Mizzou 2017 Preview

Ole Miss

The one positive out of the disastrous second half of last season was the rise of Shea Patterson as a rising star passer to rally the beleaguered program around. He’ll take his lumps in what might be a rough year, but the talent is undeniable. JUCO transfer Jordan Ta’amu should own the backup job.

And the starter will be … Shea Patterson, Soph.
Ole Miss 2017 Preview

South Carolina

Jake Bentley wasn’t expected to do anything in his freshman season, but he turned into the spark the program needed. So good that star recruit Brandon McIlwain chose to transfer, the pressure is on Bentley to do even more. Michal Scarnecchia is a good veteran option to have in the bank.

And the starter will be … Jake Bentley, Soph.
South Carolina 2017  Preview

Tennessee

Tennessee might have been a disappointing dud, but Joshua Dobbs did everything he could to save the season. He’s gone, but the Vols have a terrific situation, with Quinten Dormady a great-looking option who appears ready to step in and be more than fine, while Jarrett Guarantano will someday be the starter.

And the starter will be … Quinten Dormady, Jr.
Tennessee 2017 Preview

Texas A&M

Easily the SEC’s most interesting quarterback situation – with some due respect to Florida – Jake Hubenak is the veteran who knows the offense, Nick Starkel was a good recruit with the upside to shine in the system, and Kellen Mond is a fantastic recruit who might just take over right away. It’ll be Mond’s gig soon enough, but since the opener is at UCLA …

And the starter will be ... Jake Hubenak, Sr.
Texas A&M 2017 Preview

Vanderbilt

Kyle Shurmur only threw nine touchdown passes, but he was terrific down the stretch throwing for 221 yards or more in all four November games, with 416 yards in the win over Tennessee. Can he hang on to the job if Missouri-then-Virginia transfer Marvin Zanders comes in and provides more of a dynamic option?

And the starter will be … Kyle Shurmur, Jr.
Vanderbilt 2017 Preview

Sun Belt

Appalachian State

The Mountaineers have one of the Sun Belt’s best veteran ballers, Taylor Lamb isn’t a big bomber, but he’s been through the wars and knows what he’s doing. Sophomore J.P. Caruso isn’t all that big, but he can throw.

And the starter will be … Taylor Lamb, Jr.
Appalachian State 2017 Preview

Arkansas State

Former Oklahoma transfer Justice Hansen was in a fight for time early on last year, but he turned out to be great over the second half of the season. Now he needs to be more consistent, but the Red Wolves are set.

Arkansas State 2017 Preview

Coastal Carolina

Syracuse transfer Austin Wilson will likely get the first look, but there are other options for the new FCSer to play around with. There are four other options after a year when eight different players threw a pass.  5-9, 195-pound senior led the team in passing last year with ten scoring passes and just two picks in seven starts, but …

And the starter will be … Austin Wilson, Sr.
Coastal Carolina 2017 Preview

Georgia Southern

Longtime quarterback duo Kevin Ellison and Favian Upshaw are gone. Now it’s likely up to Seth Shuman to run the option attack – if it’s not LaBaron Anthony or redshirt freshman Shai Werts. While Shuman has the experience, Werts was the best player this offseason. It’ll be a war for the job in August.

And the starter will be … Seth Shuman, Soph.
Georgia Southern 2017 Preview

Georgia State

Conner Manning had his moments. He wasn’t consistent, and he couldn’t get the offense going at times, but he threw a whale of a scare into Wisconsin. JUCO transfer Jaquez Parks and the quick Aaron Winchester will fight it out of the No. 2 job.

And the starter will be … Conner Manning, Sr.
Georgia State 2017 Preview

Idaho

Matt Linehan has turned into a nice statistical star under head coach Paul Petrino. He’s a veteran now who knows how to get the offense moving, while Gunnar Amos and Mason Petrino will work as the backups.

Idaho 2017 Preview

Louisiana

Anthony Jennings came in from LSU and turned into a solid starter. He’s gone, and now it’s an open race between Jordan Davis and Dion Ray, with each needing to provide more pop to the downfield passing game.

And the starter will be … Jordan Davis, Jr.
Louisiana 2017 Preview

New Mexico State

Tyler Rogers got a medical redshirt and should be able to crank up the passing game again. Nick Jeanty has seen enough time to be okay, and JUCO transfer Conner Cramer is ready to roll if needed. But …

NMSU 2017 Preview

South Alabama

Dallas Davis didn’t dominate, but he came up with a few massive wins to get the team bowl eligible. He’s a solid all-around veteran, while Marshall transfer Cole Garvin and UAB transfer Evan Orth will be in the hunt for the backup job.

And the starter will be … Dallas Davis, Jr.
South Alabama 2017 Preview

Texas State

A whole lot of pressure is being put on the new guy. With Nick Fitzgerald firmly entrenched as the star of the Mississippi State attack, Damian Williams transferred for his final season. The O needs playmakers, and he needs to be it. He’d better rock, because with Missouri transfer Eddie Printz gone, four true freshmen and one redshirt freshman are the backups.

And the starter will be … Damian Williams, Sr.
Texas State 2017 Preview

Troy

All Brandon Silvers did was rise up and throw for 3,180 yards and 23 touchdowns in a breakthrough season for the Trojans. Sophomore Sawyer Smith saw just enough time to get his feet wet.

And the starter will be … Brandon Silvers, Sr.
Troy 2017 Preview

ULM

Garrett Smith needs to be healthy, but if he is, he’s the difference-maker the ULM offense desperately needs. Caleb Evans and Will Collins got work last year and didn’t do enough with the offense.
