UTSA is about to be the hot Conference USA program with the hot head coach, breaking through in a football-mad state and carving out its own niche.

Texas didn’t go bowling last year. Neither did Texas Tech, Rice, or UTEP. UTSA went to a bowl game, and now under second-year man Frank Wilson, the expectations are there with a team loaded with experience, potential, and emerging young stars.

The Roadrunners were fine as they got going in the FBS world under Larry Coker, but after two losing seasons, in came Wilson to do some more rebuilding in an attempt to take a positive step forward. Instead, the former LSU assistant and super-recruiter turned in one of the best coaching jobs in the country and made UTSA football dangerous.

So how did it happen? How did UTSA go from being a punchless speed bump to a tough, dangerous team that pushed Arizona State and Texas A&M in okay losses, and got to six wins and the New Mexico Bowl?

The offense starting scoring a bit for the first time in years, the defense came up with a hard-nosed attitude of a season against the run, and the players in place from the Coker era began to mature and grow into talented producers, with seven All-Conference USA stars breaking through.

And that was before Wilson hit the recruiting trail.

A brilliant salesman, Wilson showed he had the head coaching chops last season, too. Now, with a bowl game under his belt, a six-win season, and a strong recruiting class, UTSA has the basics in place to push for far more.
