At least Julian Edelman is doing big things for the Kent State program on a big scale.

With just one winning season since 2001 – the phenomenal 11-3 2012 campaign seems more and more like a quirky aberration – with Paul Haynes fighting the good fight to do something, anything to make Kent State football a player again in the MAC world over the last four years.

He knows how to coach up defenses, and he’s put together some good ones, but Kent State has proven to be a tough nut to crack, going 12-35 with three straight nine loss seasons. And why?

There’s just no offense.

The defenses haven’t always been great, but they’ve had their moments under Haynes – considering there hasn’t been any help from the offense – but it’s just about impossible to win when you score fewer than 21 points in 26 of your last 36 games, and you don’t have a passing game, and you sputter to get to 300 yards per outing, it’ll be hard to pull off anything positive.

And now the clock is ticking. Haynes and his staff might be doing what they can, but a fifth year at the helm will almost certainly be the final one if there’s another 3-9 campaign without anything changing.

It’s happened before, but can Haynes pull off a 2012-like miracle? Can Kent State be this year’s Eastern Michigan?

It had better be.
