Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Anything interesting happening at Ole Miss lately?
It’s not like the controversy has flown under the radar, but compared to the nightmare at Baylor and the concerns at Michigan State, the problems just haven’t been front and center.
There’s no bowl bid this year – part of the punishment for being naughty – so the Rebels are taking the attitude that every game is like a bowl game. Okay, great, but will that mean they’ll be extra motivated for South Alabama?
They’d better be.
The Jaguars shocked Mississippi State to start last season, and later stunned eventual Mountain West champ San Diego State. Obviously this is a new year and a new team, but head coach Joey Jones has a team good enough to be in the mix for another bowl bid. But is it good enough to deal with an Ole Miss team that might be a whole lot better than it’ll get credit for?
This isn’t the killer Rebel team of two years ago – or even early on last season before the implosion and the losing run – but QB Shae Patterson and the offense should come out roaring.
At least that’s the hope.
The USA linebacking corps has enough talent to keep this from getting out of hand, while the Ole Miss defense might not be appreciably better than the one that got ripped up over the final few games.
It won’t be another opening weekend Sun Belt-over-SEC upset to kick things off, but it might not be as easy as Rebel fans might like.
