Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
It’s the third-ever meeting between the two, with Nevada winning at home in 2006 and losing in Evanston in 2007. Now, it’s a new era for the Wolf Pack, and it might be a new world for Northwestern, too.
Coming off a 7-6 season that was better than it might have looked – there was a great rally to get bowl eligible before beating Pitt in the Pinstripe Bowl – now the Cats are going to be dangerous.
There might be some replacements needed at linebacker and receiver, but QB Clayton Thorson should evolve into a sleeper NFL prospect, and the rest of the backfield is terrific.
The offense should be better, and the defense just good enough, but everyone has to gear it up for what’s coming.
The Nevada offense might not be ready to rock on Day One, but under new head coach Jay Norvell, the offense is going to an Air Raid style that’ll wing the ball all over the yard. Alabama transfer David Cornwell will take over at center, and he and the O could be dangerous.
But the Nevada defense is the Nevada defense. It’ll be better, but it’s still going to be way too leaky. Unlike last year – after staring 1-3 – Northwestern will get out to a better start at home.
Thorson will have a good day, but RB Justin Jackson will go off – he’ll get 200 total yards.
