Welcome to the first look and picks for the biggest games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Time to get the P.J. Fleck era going.
The last time he had to face Buffalo, his Western Michigan team came up with a walk-in-the-park 38-0 win in Kalamazoo. This time around, he’s expected to do even more in the Minnesota hope opener before going off to deal with Oregon State on the road.
Buffalo is better this year, but it still might not be nearly enough to hang around. It’s got an interesting big quarterback in Tyree Jackson, but he shouldn’t be enough to overcome a defensive front that might get steamrolled over.
The Gophers have to break in a new quarterback, and have to try finding some key new receivers who can step up and produce right away, but it’ll be too easy to keep pounding the rock with their great running backs.
There might not be anything pretty about this, but it should be effective for the Gophers. As long as the offense controls the clock, wins the turnover battle, and comes up with a great defensive performance, it’ll be business as usual – and hopefully better.
Minnesota isn’t great at getting off to easy starts, but this should be different. This should be statement time for the new guy.
