All You Really Need To Know About Michigan State

(Big Ten) RPI: 50, 9 seed

The Spartans could never seem to get their season going. While they got over an ugly midseason stretch, they started to turn it on over the finishing kick only to lose three of their last four games.

They don’t hit free throws, they’re miserable at coming up with steals and forcing errors, and they don’t have a whole lot of scoring pop, but they move the ball around well and can get hot from three from time to time. Can freshman Miles Bridges get rolling? He might have to do it all to get MSU into the second weekend.

All You Really Need To Know About Miami

(ACC) RPI: 42, 8 seed

They’re picking the wrong time to go cold, losing three of their last four games, with the offense struggling over the last part of the season and fighting way too hard in several tough wins. There isn’t much firepower, but they can hang with the grinders – beating Virginia on the road in overtime.

There’s little ball movement, little from three, and not a lot of pop, but the Canes hit the boards hard. The key is to get hot early, but they’ll beat mid-major that isn’t creatively-good at hitting from three, or ultra-tough on the glass – like Florida State.

What’s Going To Happen

Look elsewhere for anything pretty.

Neither team scores all that well, they both grind out defensively, and they each hit the boards hard. Miami is a tough matchup for Michigan State – the Canes might be able to outtough and outgrind the  tough, grinding team.

The Spartans are better from three, they don’t make as many mistakes, and they move the ball around far, far better. It’ll be a fight, but no way, no how does Tom Izzo lose in the first round for a second year in a row.
