Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
It’s the first ever game between the two schools, in an interesting neutral site game in Houston.
LSU gets the true warm-up game after this – going against UT-Chattanooga – before starting out SEC play with a trip to Mississippi State. Overall, the schedule is very, very favorable over the first month of the season, but with three road games in the next four after October 1st, there’s no room for a misfire against the dangerous Cougars.
BYU will already have a game under its belt – starting the season out against Portland State. but it has a rough stretch to start with Utah and Wisconsin after this.
The Cougars might not be anything amazing, but QB Tanner Mangum is a good veteran who knows how to create a little magic, the offensive line is talented and experience, and while the linebacking corps might not be the best in college football, it’s not all that far off.
The defensive front has the talent and experience to keep LSU RB Derrius Guice from going off – at least that’s the goal.
The Tigers have an incredible offensive backfield, to go along with a good enough defense to stop the Cougar ground game cold.
LSU will struggle far more than the fan base might like, but Magnum won’t be able to deal with Arden Key and the pass rush – or the Tiger secondary.
