All You Really Need To Know About Northern Kentucky

(Horizon) RPI: 87, 15 seed

Third in the Horizon regular season but champs of the tournament, this is a dangerous Norse team that wins by getting on the boards. They got blown away by West Virginia, and went through an ugly stretch in the middle of the season, but they got hot late.

The Norse can’t shoot free throws, but they can bomb from three and grab the rebound when they whiff. However, they have a big problem with turnovers, won’t provide much fight in the defensive interior, and again, those free throws – it’s going to be a killer.

All You Really Need To Know About Kentucky

(SEC) RPI: 4, 2 seed

This is how you come into the NCAA Tournament, winning 11 straight playing the best ball of the year. This isn’t a killer Kentucky team of one-and-doners like past champions with some senior veterans sprinkled into the mix. But of course, the young guys rule the UK world with Malik Monk a gunner from the outside to go along with fellow freshmen De’Aaron Fox, Edrice Adebayo and Isaiah Briscoe to crank up an O that’s able to play with any style.

Ultra-athletic, they rebound everything, block everything, and pass the ball around well enough to always get the right shot – at least lately. Outside of Monk, there’s not a lot from the outside, and there are problems on the free throw line, but the machine is humming.

What’s Going To Happen

The Norse will have a few moments when they hit a few threes in a row to get John Calipari mad, and then comes the run. The Wildcats will force too many mistakes and be too good in transition once they find their groove. Northern Kentucky doesn’t have the defense to come up with any meaningful stops to keep this close, much less pull off the upset.
