What’s the deal with Florida?
Okay, Florida. How do you top that?
The Badgers had the Gators dead, and then came the Chris Chiozza floating three for the 84-83 win to keep the terrific run going.
Everyone will remember the finish, but Florida has been fantastic so far this tournament with dominant wins over ETSU and Virginia before getting by the Badger team that got by the No. 1 overall seed Villanova. The aggressive defense and the attacking style works. And now it might be just good enough to get into the Final Four.
Helped by a big inside presence, 13 offensive rebounds, and a 35-point game from KeVaughn Allen against the fantastic Wisconsin defense to survive and advance.
However, what Florida didn’t do was stop Bucky from the field, allowing the UW offense to hit 51% of its shots. Had the Badgers been better than 20-of-30 on the free throw line, it wouldn’t have been great to be a Florida Gator.
What’s the deal with South Carolina?
Other than Kansas and North Carolina, South Carolina has been the best team in the tournament so far.
The Gamecocks blew up a dangerous Marquette team by 20, got by Duke, and then bombed Baylor in a special 70-50 performance for the deepest run in the basketball program’s history.
With balanced scoring – four different players hit double digits against the Bears, highlighted by 24 from Sindarius Thornwell – and a suffocating defense that held BU to 3-of-13 from three and just 30% from the field, it all worked from the start.
There were 16 turnovers, and the Gamecocks got outrebounded, but it didn’t matter on the way to the blowout. This is a different team than the one that sputtered and coughed late in the season, including an 81-66 loss to the Gators. But …
What’s Going To Happen
Again, this isn’t the same team that stunk it up losing six of its last nine games before the NCAAs. Florida might be better, more talented, and is in almost as much of a groove as South Carolina. Almost. The Gamecock defense ramped it up against Baylor, and the offense continued to follow.
When will USC wake up and realize that it’s just not this good? In Glendale.
