2017 CFN Pac-12 Preview: The Good & The Bad

2017 CFN Preseason Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year

QB Sam Darnold, Soph. USC

This is hardly the lock you’d think it is. There’s a chance Darnold isn’t going to be the best quarterback in his own division – UCLA’s Josh Rosen will be right there – or even the conference. Remember, Washington’s Jake Browning was the Pac-12’s First Team All-Pac-12 quarterback.

But, of course, this is going to be the year of Darnold if he can stay in one piece. The 6-4, 225-pounder went from being great to legendary with his performance in the win over Penn State in the Rose Bowl, and now the expectations are through the roof. All he has to do is win the Heisman, take USC to the College Football Playoff, and become the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. No biggie.

2017 CFN Preseason Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year

LB Azeem Victor, Sr. Washington

The Huskies might have lost some of their stars in the secondary – safeties Budda Baker and Sidney Jones, and CB Kevin King were special – but 13 of the top 17 tacklers are back. The UW defense is going to be more than okay, and it starts with getting back Azeem Victor, the team’s second-leading returning tackler behind Keishawn Bierria.

Very quick and a massive hitter, Victor came up with 162 tackles over the last few all-star seasons. Now that he’s healthy, the numbers will be tremendous to go along with hie leadership for the front seven.
