Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.

Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?

It’s about as good a Group of Five showdown as it gets.

Boise State is either the favorite to win the Mountain West title, or it’s at least a close No. 2. Troy is either the favorite to win the Sun Belt title, or it’s at least a close No. 2 behind Appalachian State. And for the winner of this, the hope is for the loser to go on to take its conference title.

Someone has to represent the GOFers in a New Year’s Six Bowl – Boise State won the 2014 Fiesta Bowl over Arizona – and there almost certainly won’t be one coming from the MAC again.

The winner of this gets to make a big statement in the race, especially if it’s Troy getting the job done on the road.

Boise State should be stronger after crashing late last season, losing the final two games in what should’ve been a far, far stronger year. With a trip to Washington State up next, and road dates at BYU and San Diego State in the first half of the year, a home loss would be a total disaster.

Troy has smooth sailing after this – until a date at LSU to close out September. With no Appalachian State to deal with, the Sun Belt schedule is easy enough to take down, but beating Boise State would be a big plus to prove that last year’s ten-win campaign wasn’t a fluke.

The Trojans have the offensive firepower, but they don’t have the lines. The Bronco ground game should take control right away, but’ll be the secondary that comes through in the second half.

Takeaways were a big problem for the Boise State defense last year, but it’ll get two to put the game away.
