Welcome to the first look and picks for the opening week games of the 2017 college football season. These quick thoughts are being done in early June, with the real Fearless Prediction and expanded breakdown coming in August.
Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?
Only the second time the two programs have played – Auburn won the 1991 opener 32-17 – welcome to a showdown of two of the nation’s top rushing teams.
Georgia Southern finished 29th in the nation last year, but the option rushing attack should come back and be a factor again like it was two seasons ago when it led the nation averaging 363 yards per game.
New offensive coordinator Bryan Cook comes in from Georgia Tech, and now … look out.
Meanwhile, the Auburn ground game that was so devastating last season – finishing sixth in the nation – should be every bit as good. But the attention won’t be on Kamryn Pettway or Kerryon Johnson – this is the debut of Jarrett Stidham, the new quarterback.
Will there be a higher-octane passing game to balance things out? With Clemson up next, the Tigers have a game to get it all together – and they will.
The Auburn linebacking corps is good enough to overcome the Eagle running game that’ll control the battle for stretches. While the Georgia Southern secondary will be the strength the D, it won’t be able to chill the excitement over an ultra-efficient day from Stidham.
