No. 70: Toledo Rockets

Toledo Rockets Prespring Status

The Rockets still haven’t been able to break back through and be the star of the MAC, but it continues to be one of the league’s best programs – it just so happened to run into the Western Michigan season of seasons. Head coach Jason Candle and his staff cranked up a fantastic offense and a good-enough defense, but the team still lost the two big games at the end to WMU and the bowl to Appalachian State.

There’s a rebuild needing to be done on that devastating offense, losing six starters including some of the MAC’s best talents, but the defense gets back seven starters and might have to carry things for a little while.

Toledo Rockets Biggest Issue

The offensive line needs a bit of a redo. The Rockets allowed a mere 14 sacks on the season with a line that paved the way for close to five yards per carry, led by al-star left tackle Storm Norton and Paul Perschon next to him, and Mike Ebert at right guard. Losing 16-touchdown tight end Michael Roberts and 1,475-yard, ten-score rusher Kareem Hunt is a problem, too.

Toledo Rockets Biggest Positive

There’s still enough talent back at offense to not be all that bad. QB Logan Woodside is back after throwing for 4,129 yards and 45 scores, and he gets back a slew of his key weapons with Cody Thompson and Jon’Vea Johnson two good wideouts who combined for 21 touchdowns and each cranked up over 19 yards per catch. Yeah, Hunt was the star of the running game, but Terry Swanson is a strong veteran who can handle the work.

Really, Why Are The Toledo Rockets Ranked Here?

The offense will be fine, but it won’t be quite as strong, while the defense should be solid despite the losses up front and with leading tackler DeJuan Rogers done in the secondary. There won’t be a Western Michigan-like season with a run to a New Year’s Six game, but even with the concerns and losses, this should be once again be one of the favorites to take the MAC title.
