No. 66: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Prespring Status

After losing to Western Kentucky in the Conference USA championship, and coming back to beat Navy in the bowl, Louisiana Tech showed just how dangerous it could be under Skip Holtz. Finishing second in the nation in scoring and passing was fun, winning nine games was better, and now the expectations will be high enough to shoot for a title.

But can Holtz keep it all going without the key stars? Five starters are back on offense, but the devastating playmakers are gone. With seven starters returning on defense, there’s a chance the Bulldogs are stronger after finishing with one of the nation’s worst pass defenses.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Biggest Issue

There’s losing production, and there’s losing 218 catches, 3,358 yards and 31 touchdowns from Trent Taylor and – after leaving early for the NFL – Carlos Henderson. Ryan Higgins bombed away for 4,617 yards and 41 touchdowns in an amazing season, and now it’ll likely be up to J’mar Smith to try to keep it all going. There’s receiving talent in place, but Taylor and Henderson were special.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Biggest Positive

The pass rush should be tremendous. The Bulldogs were great all season long at getting into the backfield, with Jaylon Ferguson coming up with 14.5 sacks as the star to reload the defensive front around. 35 of the 44 sacks from last year are back, so while the secondary will have to deal with getting bombed on by offenses trying to keep up the pace, the pressure will be on.

Really, Why Are The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Ranked Here?

Even with the loss of Higgins, Taylor and Henderson, this should still be the Conference USA star – or one of them – to start the season. Holtz has created an offensive juggernaut that should be able to fill in the pieces, while the defense should be able to hold its own just enough get by against the average-to-below teams in the league. Once again, the Bulldogs will be dangerous.
