2017 Prespring Rankings: No. 130 UAB Blazers
The 2017 prespring college football rankings, taking the first look at the UAB Blazers
No. 130 UAB Blazers
UAB Blazers Prespring Status
Uhhhh, your guess is as good as anyone else’s. We know that Bill Clark is the head coach, taking the Blazers to a 6-6 record before the siesta. We know that UAB will be playing football again after taking a few years off. We know that the opening game is against Alabama A&M, and there’s a date at Florida in late November. We know that the program will be in Conference USA West and will be eligible for a bowl game – not a given, considering fellow newbie, Coastal Carolina, isn’t. What we don’t know is the full makeup of the team, the style, or the substance of what’s coming.
UAB’s Biggest Issue
Who can play? Almost every good young player from the 2014 team went somewhere else, and while the Blazers aren’t starting from scratch, they’re not far off. The next several months will be about seeing where everyone fits in the depth chart, how the mass of JUCO transfers can step in right away, and who the playmakers are going to be. There’s a roster, and there are UAB Blazer football players – after that, everything is up in the air.
UAB’s Biggest Positive
This will be one fired up football program. Brought back to life, there’s a real enthusiasm among a loyal fan base and school that now knows what it lost. There won’t be any expectations whatsoever considering everyone will pick the Blazers to finish dead last, everyone will be circling UAB as the easy win, and everyone will assume it’ll take a few years go make a mark of any sort.
Really, Why Are The UAB Blazers Ranked Here?
Guaranteed, UAB won’t be ranked 130 out of 130 teams at the end of the 2017 season. There’s a good coaching staff in place, the program spent last year starting to get back up to speed, and there’s real hope that this isn’t a total wipeout of a year in a mediocre conference full of winnable games. However, for now, UAB gets the dreaded 130 spot based on the uncertainty. There are rebuilding years, and there’s 2017 UAB.
