No. 120: Fresno State Bulldogs

Fresno State Bulldogs Prespring Status

They got the guy. Jeff Tedford might have been out of the head coaching game for a while, but after the Tim DeRuyter era shockingly tumbled into the abyss, the program had to do something splashy. Tedford has the resume for cranking up high-powered offenses and getting great play out of his quarterbacks, and now, coming off a 1-11 season with no FBS wins, Fresno State can’t help but be better.

Fresno State Bulldogs Biggest Issue

Are the pieces there for Tedford to work with? Does he have a quarterback? Chason Virgil will get the first look after throwing for more than 2,000 yards as a redshirt freshman, but JUCO transfers Mark Salazer and Jorge Reyna will be in the fight for time with Christian Rossi and Quentin Davis for a look. Quarterbacks are going to start flocking to Fresno now – especially with what Aaron Rodgers is doing – but this was one of the least-efficient passing games in America. It might not turn around right away.

Fresno State Bulldogs Biggest Positive

The offensive line might have stunk last season, but at least everyone returns. That might be like the line that the food is bad, but the portions are huge, but the line should help the cause right away for a new coaching staff to at least have experience up front. All five starters return to a line that gave up 31 sacks and did nothing for the ground game, but this could quickly turn into a plus if experience matters.

Really, Why Are The Fresno State Bulldogs Ranked Here?

A reasonable case could be made that this was the worst overall team in college football last season – and it was close, finishing 127th in the CFN Season Rankings. There were several close calls with four losses by a touchdown or less, but in a good Mountain West, it’s too much to ask for Tedford to turn the Bulldogs back into a conference powerhouse overnight.
