Both teams need a win, but for vastly different reasons.

Western Kentucky hasn’t been the Western Kentucky of the last few years – the offense isn’t nearly as explosive – and while it won four of its last five games, it hasn’t beaten anyone.

The four wins – Ball State, UTEP, Charlotte and Old Dominion – came against four of the worst teams in college football, and then came the double-digit home loss to Florida Atlantic to screw up hopes of repeating as Conference USA champs.

The Hilltoppers will win another game and go bowling, but they need to show they can win a decent game.

Vanderbilt is on a five-game losing streak, and it hasn’t been pretty.

After puffing out its chest following a win over Kansas State, Alabama unleashed a right hook and the program hasn’t recovered.

Now, the Commodores have to win three of their last four games to go bowling. With Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee to close, that’s possible, but they have to beat WKU first.

One Reason Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The WKU offense has no running game.

After tearing off 2,609 yards and 35 rushing scores last year, WKU has just 666 yards on the ground and 14 touchdowns – the O line isn’t providing a push. It’s not going to do it against Vandy, either.

The Commodores’ issue is stopping the run – that won’t be a problem this week. 11th in the nation in pass defense, Vandy has to come up with a few third down stops here and there, and it should be fine.

One Reason Why WKU Will Win

Can Mike White crank up the passing game a little bit?

Yeah, Vanderbilt might have great stats against the pass, but that’s because everyone spends so time running the ball.

It’s a different year, but he threw for 222 yards in last year’s thrilling 31-30 loss to the Commodores. This isn’t the same WKU passing game of last year, but it’s starting to work again with White throwing for close to 1,100 yards with 12 touchdowns over the last three games.

At the very least, he’ll keep pushing through the air. Get up, and make this a shootout.

What’s Going To Happen

There are too many problems with WKU in too many places. It can’t run, can’t stop the run, and it doesn’t generate any sort of a pass rush.

Finally, Ralph Webb and the Vanderbilt ground game will start to work, there will be decent balance, and finally, it’ll get another win.

A desperately needed win.
