For all the drama around losing head coach Jim Mora Jr., and all the excitement about possibly landing Chip Kelly, UCLA still has work to do this season.

As bad as things have been, and as disappointing as the team has been, beat Cal, and UCLA is going bowling.

Losers of three of their last four games, the Bruins put up a great fight in the loss to USC, but it was still a loss to USC.

And now it’ll be up to interim head man Jedd Fisch to to step in and get the job done, getting one win to extend the Josh Rosen college career by one more game.

But Cal needs this, too.

In his first year, head coach Justin Wilcox can take the Bears bowling with a win. The Bears, like the Bruins, have lost three of their last four, and they lost  a good fight to their rival – dropping the The Big Game to Stanford 17-14 – but with one win this week in the Rose Bowl, it’ll be a successful season.

One Reason Why UCLA Will Win

As good as the Cal coaching staff is, and as strong as it is dealing with defenses, the pass defense isn’t slowing anyone down.

The Bears were helped by playing passing-challenged Oregon State and Stanford over the last two weeks, but Colorado’s Steven Montez fired at will, Washington State was Washington State, and there haven’t been any problems by anyone trying to push the ball for big plays.

Enter Josh Rosen in what might be his final college football game.

Brilliant against USC, he kept the team in the game with 421 yards and three touchdowns, working with Jordan Lasley on big play after big play.

The two hooked up ten times for 204 yards and three scores, and now it’s up to them to keep this all going to make up for …

One Reason Why Cal Will Win

The UCLA run defense – it’s still a problem.

One of the biggest shockers of the Pac-12 season was how the Bruins rose up against USC’s ground attack. One of the nation’s worst run Ds came up with its best performance of the year, allowing a season-best 153 yards against the Trojans, and three touchdowns.

That’s all about to change.

Cal has the ability to throw a bit, but it’s at its best when it’s able to grind away. This isn’t a great ground game, but it showed against Oregon State that it could balance things out, coming up with 216 yards and two scores two weeks ago, and avenging well over five yards per carry last week against Stanford.

Start running, keep running, try to keep Mr. Rosen off the field.

What’s Going To Happen

How will UCLA respond to the loss of Mora? The team will rally around Rosen who’ll outbomb Ross Bowers and a Cal offense that will hang stride for stride in a terrific shootout.

The UCLA-USC game was terrific, but it wasn’t the firefight everyone was expecting. This will be, with both teams fighting for a bowl slot.

UCLA is 5-0 in the Rose Bowl, 0-6 on the road, and this is in Pasadena.
