What’s Going To Happen

This might not be an American Athletic title preview considering the loser might end up scrambling to get in, but it’s close enough to be one of the league’s biggest games of  the season.

Both teams are bowl eligible – that concern is out of the way – and now it’s time to start doing a lot more, with UCF looking to get to the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six games and SMU, again, trying to stay alive for the conference title by keeping up with Memphis.

With an ultra-efficient passing game and a defense that overcomes a lack of a pass rush by attacking the run from several sides, the formula has worked. It’s a confident-playing team that isn’t afraid to take shots down the field while not giving the ball away.

The Knights have just five turnovers on the year.

SMU has the passing game to keep up the pace. The D can’t stop anyone on third down, and it gives up too many big plays, but the pass rush will bother UCF star QB McKenzie Milton and turnovers won’t be a problem for this offense, either.

The issue will be the Mustang secondary. SMU will keep up the pace with its great offense, but the D just won’t ever be able to come up with a stop needed to hold serve. Expect a whole lot of passing yards from both sides and a whole bunch of points in a wild firefight.
